Sailing Area: Porto Pignataro, Lipari, Aeolian islands, Sicily

Porto Pignataro is the main dedicated yacht marina in the Aeolian Islands — a natural inlet on the north side of Lipari, protected by an artificial breakwater, offering better all-round shelter than Marina Lunga (the main port immediately to the south). While Marina Lunga is exposed to winds from the east through north, Pignataro’s breakwater shields it from most directions and the currents here are consistently calm. For sailors who expect unsettled conditions, or who simply want more security than the open pontoons of Marina Lunga, Pignataro is the first choice on Lipari.

Approach & Shelter

Porto Pignataro is obtained from a natural inlet on the north side of Lipari’s roadstead, sheltered by an artificial breakwater on the WSW side. The marina sits at the far northern end of the bay, past the commercial piers and fishing boat berths. Approach from the NE, keeping to the east side of the bay entrance. The breakwater gives shelter from westerly and southwesterly winds — the most common summer direction. Currents inside are always calm.

⚠ Strong Scirocco: Porto Pignataro (like all of Lipari’s east-facing anchorages) is exposed to strong Scirocco from SE and Levante from E. In strong easterlies, the bay becomes untenable — both Pignataro and Marina Lunga will be uncomfortable. The only option in sustained easterlies is to depart for Vulcano (Porto di Ponente shelters from NE–SE) or anchor on Lipari’s west coast in settled conditions.

Pignataro vs Marina Lunga

Porto Pignataro Marina Lunga
Location 1 nm north of centre Directly below citadel
Shelter Better — breakwater protection Exposed N through E
Ferry wash Less affected Constant ferry wash all day
Town access 10–15 min walk / shuttle Immediate
Fuel Eolian Bunker nearby Same bunker accessible
Best for Overnight stay, rough conditions, larger boats Short stay, immediate town access

Getting to Town

The centre of Lipari (Marina Corta, citadel, Corso Vittorio Emanuele) is approximately 1 km from Porto Pignataro — 10–15 minutes on foot. In high season a shuttle bus runs every 30 minutes. Scooter and car rental is available nearby. Taxis also available. The walk follows the coastal road past Marina Lunga and is pleasant in the evening.

Sailor’s tip: If Marina Lunga is full (common in July–August from midday onwards), head straight to Pignataro. Call on VHF Ch 09 before entering. Pignataro is 1 nm further north but substantially better sheltered, and the 15-minute walk to town is worth it for a secure overnight berth. The Eolian Bunker fuel pier is conveniently between the two marinas on the bay.

✅ Safety Checklist
