Sailing Area: Panarea, Aeolian islands, Sicily, Aeolian islands, Sicily

Panarea is the smallest and most exclusive of the Aeolian Islands — 3.4 km², population around 250 permanent residents, and the undisputed glamour capital of the archipelago. By day it is a sun-drenched paradise of whitewashed houses, bougainvillea alleyways, and crystalline coves accessible only by sea. By night, the terrace at Hotel Raya transforms into one of the most famous open-air nightclubs in Italy — celebrity sightings (Armani, Bezos, Katy Perry, Rihanna) are genuinely common in high season. Panarea was popular with Italian and European aristocracy since the 1960s; the Borghese, Visconti, and Bulgari families all have houses here. No cars or motorised vehicles for tourists — the island is navigated entirely on foot along narrow white-paved paths.

Bottaro / Lisca Bianca islets 5–13m Sand Between the islets SE of Panarea. Watch shallow areas carefully. Excellent snorkelling and underwater fumaroles.
Spiaggia della Calcara Variable Volcanic NW coast. Geysers and underwater fumaroles on the beach. Unusual volcanic experience. Day stop only.

Navigation Notes

Panarea sits on a broad underwater platform that projects above the surface at numerous points around the island — the islets of Panarelli, Dattilo, Lisca Bianca, Lisca Nera, Basiluzzo, and the Formiche Rocks. This means the entire perimeter of the island demands careful attention to the chart. Keep chartplotter zoomed in when approaching any of the coves.

⚠ Submerged rocks & shoals: The underwater platform around Panarea creates hazards that are not always clearly charted. Multiple Roman shipwrecks on the Formiche Rocks (the “Ants”) attest to the dangers of the eastern approaches. When entering Cala Junco: care on both sides of the narrow entrance — rocks above and below water. Always approach at slow speed with crew on the bow. Hold at least 10–15m offshore until the charted anchorage is confirmed.

⚠ San Pietro buoy fields — ferry zone: Hold at least 500m clear of the ferry turning area at San Pietro. Passenger ferries and hydrofoils arrive throughout the day. The two organised buoy fields (N and S of the pier) fill early — if space is tight, anchor beyond the buoy field in the bay.

️ What to See

Cala Junco — the Natural Pool

The finest cove in Panarea and one of the best in all the Aeolians — a natural amphitheatre of red volcanic rock enclosing turquoise water. Accessible by sea directly from the anchorage, or by a 30-minute path on foot from San Pietro. The seabed inside the cove is exceptional for snorkelling. Go early morning in July–August; by midday it is crowded with day visitors and excursion boats.

Villaggio Preistorico di Capo Milazzese

Immediately above Cala Junco, on the promontory of Capo Milazzese, stands one of the most important Bronze Age sites in the Aeolians — 23 oval huts from approximately 1400 BC, their stone foundations still intact on the clifftop. The view from the site over the sea and surrounding islets is extraordinary. Access via the same path as Cala Junco — a 30-minute walk from San Pietro. Free and unguided. The archaeological finds from here and from nearby Roman shipwrecks are on display at the Museo Eoliano in Lipari.

Cala degli Zimmari

The only sandy beach on the entire island — distinctive for its reddish-coloured sand, which makes the cobalt water look even more intense by contrast. Sheltered and calm. Accessible by the same coastal path from San Pietro, alongside Cala Junco. A buoy field nearby for boats.

Spiaggia della Calcara — Volcanic Beach

On the NW coast, reachable only by boat. The beach here has active geysers and underwater fumaroles — volcanic gases push through the Earth’s crust directly beneath the sand and sea. One of the more unusual volcanic experiences in the Aeolians. Day stop only by dinghy.

Punta del Corvo — Summit Hike

The highest point on Panarea. A moderate walk from San Pietro. Panoramic views over the entire island, the surrounding islets, and Stromboli to the north. Best at sunset.

Basiluzzo & Lisca Bianca — The Islets

The islets off Panarea’s coast are a world of their own — Basiluzzo (a dome-shaped islet 3 km from Panarea with sheer cliffs), Lisca Bianca (white rock), and the smaller Formiche group. Anchor between the islets in 5–13m on sand for extraordinary snorkelling and the underwater fumarole field between Bottaro and Lisca Bianca — bubbles rise from the volcanic seabed in crystal-clear water. The Lanishen, an English merchant vessel wrecked on Lisca Nera in the early 1900s, lies at 30–40m — a popular dive site.

Nightlife

Panarea’s nightlife is genuinely famous across Italy and has been since the 1960s. The epicentre is Hotel Raya — its panoramic terrace starts as a sunset aperitivo spot and evolves through the night into an open-air club. Expensive, theatrical, and completely unique — the combination of dancing under the stars with Stromboli visible on the horizon is hard to match anywhere in the Mediterranean. Bars and music continue throughout the village until the early hours in high season.

️ Where to Eat

  • Raya Restaurant — panoramic terrace, Mediterranean cuisine, signature cocktails. The sunset terrace is obligatory.
  • Cusiritati — excellent fish dinner. Local recommendation.
  • Da Pina — traditional Aeolian dishes. Popular with sailors.
  • Il Macellaio — good meat and pizza (unusual in the islands).

Panarea specialities: swordfish, salt cod with capers, red mullet (triglia), and the fried dough panarellese with noodles and anchovies. Sweets: almond-based munnuli and the Christmas speciality nacatuli.

Sailor’s tip: Arrive at San Pietro by 09:00 to secure a buoy. Spend the morning at Cala Junco and the prehistoric village — these are best before the excursion boats arrive from Lipari and Stromboli. Provision here is minimal — bring everything you need from Lipari. Use the afternoon for the islet snorkelling and Calcara beach, then anchor for the Raya sunset from the boat or go ashore. The combination of the prehistoric village in the morning and Raya at sunset is what Panarea is for.
