Aeolian islands, Sicily - Sea TV sailing the aeolian Islands Sicily

Lipari is the largest of the Aeolian Islands — 37 km², 10,000 residents, and the undisputed hub of the entire archipelago. All ferry and hydrofoil lines between the islands pass through Lipari, making it both the most convenient base and the best-provisioned stop in the chain. The town clusters between two harbours separated by a 16th-century citadel on a volcanic cliff — a citadel that encloses one of the finest archaeological museums in southern Italy. The island also produces obsidian (traded throughout the ancient Mediterranean), pumice (still exported commercially, giving the northern waters their turquoise shimmer), and Malvasia dessert wine. Don’t miss the best pizza in town at Pizzeria Pescecane.

⚓ Marinas & Anchorages — Quick Facts

Port / Anchorage Coordinates Depth Notes
Marina Lunga (Porto Pignataro) 38°28.3’N / 14°57.5’E 5–8m Main yacht port. 200 berths, stern-to. Water, fuel, electricity, Wi-Fi. Book ahead in summer.
Marina Pignataro 38°28.7’N / 14°57.8’E 5–8m 1 nm NE of Marina Lunga. Inside breakwater — better shelter in adverse weather.
Marina Corta S side of citadel 10–15m Picturesque old harbour. Primarily local boats. Anchor outside breakwater on sand. Keep clear of ferry area.
Canneto N of town ~20m, sand Anchor W-SW or E of moorings. Good alternative if Marina Lunga full. Taxi-boat to town.
Punta Castagna N tip 6–10m Anchor off the beach. Calm weather only.

Marina Lunga — Main Port

Marina Lunga (also called Porto Pignataro) sits on Lipari’s east coast, immediately north of the citadel and ferry terminal. This is the main yachting hub of the entire Aeolian archipelago — full services, fuel, water, electricity, and some repair facilities. Yachts berth stern-to on two pontoons. Shelter is good from N round to SW but the bay is exposed from W round to NE. In strong easterlies it is untenable — move to Marina Pignataro which offers better all-round protection inside its breakwater.

⚠ Book ahead: Marina Lunga fills completely in July–August. Contact the marina in advance or plan to arrive early (before 10:00) to secure a berth. If full, Marina Pignataro (1 nm NE) is the best alternative, or anchor at Canneto and take the frequent bus or a taxi-boat into town.

Marina Corta — Old Harbour

Marina Corta is the postcard harbour of Lipari — small, photogenic, enclosed by the base of the citadel cliff on one side and the town promenade on the other. Primarily for local fishing boats and dinghies. Yachts can anchor just outside the breakwater on a sandy seabed at 10–15m — convenient access to the old town, but keep well clear of the ferry manoeuvring area. The evening passeggiata along Marina Corta’s quay is one of the finest small-town rituals in the Aeolians.

️ What to See

Castello & Museo Archeologico Eoliano

The 16th-century Spanish citadel rises from a volcanic promontory between the two harbours — built on the ruins of a Greek acropolis that was itself built on Neolithic remains. Inside the walls: the Museo Archeologico Eoliano, considered one of the finest archaeological museums in all of southern Italy. The collection spans obsidian tools from 4000 BC, Neolithic pottery, Bronze Age artefacts, Greek amphorae, Punic and Roman finds, and one of the largest collections of ancient theatrical masks in the world. Multiple buildings within the citadel, with a dedicated section for underwater archaeology. Entry ~€6. Also within the walls: the Norman Cathedral (built 1080, modified repeatedly), a Greek-style theatre, and an area of Greek and Roman tombs.

Belvedere di Quattrocchi

The best viewpoint on the island — 10 minutes by bus from Marina Lunga, on the western side. Panoramic views over the rocky Aeolian coast, the volcanic stacks (faraglioni) near the coast, and Vulcano directly south. A classic stop on any island circuit.

Spiaggia Bianca & Pumice Coast

The white pumice beach at the northern end of the island — Lipari’s most distinctive beach. The pumice particles give the surrounding sea an extraordinary turquoise-white colour. The former pumice quarries nearby are now an industrial landscape of white cliffs. The beach has shallow, clear water ideal for snorkelling. Both Canneto beach and Acquacalda (further north) hold Blue Flag status.

Obsidian Flows — Acquacalda & Rocche Rosse

Lipari was the source of obsidian — volcanic glass — traded throughout the ancient Mediterranean from 6000 BC. The black obsidian flows on the north coast at Acquacalda and the spectacular Rocche Rosse (red rocks) on the east coast are accessible by coastal boat or road. Seeing obsidian in situ, knowing it was the material that made Lipari the most important trading island in the prehistoric western Mediterranean, is one of those moments that change the scale of a place.

Getting Around

Lipari has an excellent round-island bus service from Marina Lunga — frequent, reliable, and cheap. All main villages (Canneto, Acquacalda, Quattropani, Pianoconte, Porticello) are connected. Scooter and car rental available from the marina. The bus between Marina Lunga and Canneto beach runs until late into the evening in high season.

️ Where to Eat

Pizzeria Pescecane

The best pizza on the island. Marina Lunga area. A SeaTV recommendation.

Ristorante da Bartolo

Excellent spaghetti con sarde and spaghetti Bartolano (local capers and basil). A CruisersWiki classic recommendation.

Ristorante da Filippino

Renowned for fresh seafood. One of the island’s most established restaurants.

Granita — Bar Alfredo / Subba

Lipari granita (especially almond) is considered among the best in Sicily. Bar Alfredo near Marina Lunga and Subba near Marina Corta are both recommended.

Sailor’s tip: Lipari is the only place in the archipelago with reliable provisioning. Stock up thoroughly here — the next reliable shops are at Salina’s Santa Marina, and Panarea and Stromboli have almost nothing. Fill water tanks at Marina Lunga. The town also has the best selection of Aeolian wines and local products including capers, sun-dried tomatoes and Malvasia.

✅ Safety Checklist

  • Marina Lunga: exposed to E winds — untenable in strong easterlies, move to Pignataro
  • Book ahead for July–August: marina fills early
  • Ferry wash at Marina Lunga all day — rig springs and extra fenders
  • Marina Corta anchor: stay clear of ferry turning area and hydrofoil lanes
  • Provision thoroughly here — best and last reliable shops before Stromboli
  • Fuel at Marina Lunga before departing north

Locations not to be missed

A tour around the island, which takes about four hours, with a rental car, can cover almost all of it. Except for observations of the nearby islands and a visit to a well-tended church in the north of the island, we were not impressed by the beauty of the great island of the Aeolian islands, for which the Lippers are named.

The city centre of Lipari is charming, with plenty of designer shops and many restaurants, up alleys and greenery, remains only a choice… A tour of the narrow streets of the city allows for a closer look at the urban life in Italy, the ‘living room’ facing the alley.

The restaurant kitchens, as well as those considered prestigious, offer a glimpse into the cook’s work, some of which have a wide window to the street, and this is apparently what the restaurant planners wanted. Romantics will probably choose a wine shop/bar, near the square overlooking the southern port, offering fine wines with a selection of cheeses and “opening” dishes, most of which feature the typical snorkel buds and, finally, the famous Malvasia dessert wine.

Within the walls of the old city, it is recommended to visit the Volcanic Museum and the Archaeological Museum, which are invested and closed (Sunday closed) and the large cathedral, with frescoes and the ancient part of the church, also visible from the sea. A beautiful view from the reconstructed amphitheatre to the south of the city and the fishing harbour.
