Sailing Area: Castelsardo, Sardinia

Castelsardo is a medieval hilltop town on the north coast of Sardinia, built by the Genoese Doria family in the 12th century. It rises from the sea to the castle ramparts over 100 metres above the Gulf of Asinara, with views that on clear days reach Corsica and the island of Asinara. On Italy’s list of the most beautiful villages, it is one of the most visually compelling stops on the north coast — and the harbour directly below the old town makes it easy to visit from the water.

Approach & Navigation

The harbour lies to the west of the village and the rocky promontory. The castle on the summit is visible from a long distance offshore and serves as the primary landmark for approach. The old town on the hillside below confirms your position.

⚠ Swell warning: In NW and N winds, swell builds at the harbour entrance. Plan your arrival outside these conditions if possible — or enter slowly and be prepared for a rolly approach. Once inside the harbour, conditions improve significantly.

Book in advance for July-August. Marina staff will direct you to your berth on arrival.

Getting to the Old Town

The village is a 20–25 minute walk from the marina, or take the bus from the stop in front of the port supermarket. There is also a bus service to Porto Torres (18 nm west). For the beach, buses also run to nearby Lu Bagnu.

️ What to See

Castello dei Doria — Museo dell’Intreccio Mediterraneo

Built in the 12th century by the Genoese Doria family, the castle dominates the promontory and is the town’s defining landmark. Inside: the Museum of Mediterranean Weaving — nine rooms dedicated to traditional Sardinian basket-making techniques using asphodel and dwarf palm. The ramparts offer the best views in the area: from Asinara in the west to Santa Teresa Gallura in the east, and on clear days to the mountains of Corsica. The climb from the base of the old town takes about 20 minutes.

Cattedrale di Sant’Antonio Abate

Just below the castle on a scenic terrace with sea views. Gothic origins, enlarged in 1597–1607 and completed in 1727. Inside: works by the mysterious Maestro di Castelsardo — a 15th-century Sardinian painter known only by his work here. The bell tower was originally built as a lighthouse. The crypt contains a museum of religious art.

Sa Costa — Old Town Streets

The medieval quarter that climbs toward the castle. Narrow cobbled lanes, stone houses, artisan workshops selling handmade baskets — many weavers still work with their doors open, using techniques unchanged for centuries. Castelsardo’s basket weaving is considered among the finest traditional crafts in Sardinia. Walk up through the streets rather than taking the direct road to the castle.

Roccia dell’Elefante (Elephant Rock)

A naturally eroded trachyte rock formation 3 km south of town that resembles an elephant in profile — a quick and worthwhile roadside stop. Inside the rock: Domus de Janas, prehistoric Neolithic tombs carved directly into the stone thousands of years ago. One of the most accessible prehistoric sites in Sardinia.

Marina di Castelsardo & Sunset

The marina below the old town at golden hour — castle above, coloured houses on the hillside, fishing boats on the water — is one of the most photographed scenes in northern Sardinia. Plan to be either on the water or at the marina itself around sunset.

️ Beaches

Lu Bagnu — 2.5 km west of town. Long sandy beach with clear water. Bus from the port supermarket stop. The best beach directly accessible from Castelsardo.

Marina di Castelsardo beach — small beach directly below the old town, rock and sand mix.

️ Where to Eat

Restaurants and pizzerias are concentrated around the marina and in the old town. Seafood is the focus — fresh fish, bottarga (cured fish roe), and local Vermentino wine. The old town has restaurants with terrace views over the gulf. The marina level is more casual.

Sailor’s tip: Sunset from the castle ramparts or the marina is exceptional. The town faces northwest and catches the last light well. If you can time your arrival for late afternoon, go straight up to the castle before it closes, then eat dinner in the old town as the temperature drops.
