Kalymnos Port & Marina (Pothia) — Main Harbour of the Sponge-Diver & Climbing Island

The bustling main port of Kalymnos at the head of the bay on the south shore — the regional hub for the sponge-diving industry that has shaped Kalymnos for 2,000+ years and the world climbing capital with 4,000+ bolted routes. Two mooring options: Kalymnos Marina (government, 25 berths, low rates, Eleni runs the WhatsApp) and Port Kalymnos (30 berths, max draft 6 m). Watch the Meltemi gusts off the high land into the port and the rocky islets all around.

Kalymnos Port and Marina sit at the head of the bay on the south shore of the island — the regional hub of Pothia, the capital town. Kalymnos is just south of Leros, framed by rocky islets, with high land that creates strong gusts down into the port when the Meltemi blows. The town is bustling and popular — and still gives off a sensation of prehistoric permanence in the way Greek-island working harbours do. Two mooring options inside the protected basin (the government-run Kalymnos Marina and the older Port Kalymnos) cover most yacht needs.

⚠ Reality check:

Strong NW Meltemi gusts blow off the high land down into the port

Rocky islets all around · careful navigation in the approach area

Marine farms at Cape Diapori (N) · plot before approach

No mooring lines at Kalymnos Marina · drop your own anchor + note where

Ferry-generated swell in the marina · expect bobbing

Night harbour lights difficult against city loom · arrive in daylight

Approach & Entry

Position: The harbour sits at the head of the bay on the south shore of Kalymnos. The harbour is protected by two moles · the entrance opens between them.

Approaching from the east: The buildings of Kalymnos town (Pothia) become visible on approach · the working town climbing up the hillside.

Approaching from the west: The town is hidden until you reach the bay entrance · come in to the bay before you’ll see the harbour.

Closer in — visual landmarks: The monastery on the hill above the town · the silver cupola of the cathedral · the outer mole of the harbour.

⚠ Hazard #1 — Rocky islets: Kalymnos is framed with rocky islets · careful navigation needed in the approach area · plot the islets on the chartplotter and give them sea room.

⚠ Hazard #2 — Marine farms: The northern shores of Kalymnos extend for 0.5 NM up · small marine farms in the northern part of Cape Diapori · don’t sail through.

⚠ Hazard #3 — Meltemi gusts: Strong gusts come off the high land down into the port when the Meltemi is blowing · can be sudden and significant · be ready.

⚠ Hazard #4 — Night arrival: The harbour lights are difficult to make out against the loom of the city lights · arrive in daylight if at all possible.

⚓ 1. Kalymnos Marina — Government Marina, Low Rates

Government-run: The marina belongs to the government — so the rates are low compared to private Aegean marinas. Practical advantage.

⚠ NO mooring lines: Drop your own bow anchor and reverse to the quay · note where your anchor is dropped (helpful for retrieval and to tell other yachts coming in).

⚠ Ferry swell: Ferries generate swell in the marina basin · expect some bobbing · secure loose items belowdecks.

Eleni (WhatsApp) — berth assistance: +30 6980104127 · she’ll help you tie up · contact in advance.

Kalymnos — The Sponge-Diver Capital & Climbing World

2,000+ Years of Sponge Diving

Kalymnos has been the centre of the Aegean sponge-diving industry for over two millennia · for centuries Kalymnian divers worked the eastern Mediterranean and the North African coast harvesting natural sponges from the seabed. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the introduction of the skafandro (the early diving suit and helmet) revolutionised the trade and made Kalymnian divers wealthy. The annual “Sponge Week” festival in early spring still celebrates the heritage. Synthetic sponges and overfishing have reduced the industry · what remains is small-scale, artisanal, and on display at the sponge shops along the Pothia waterfront.

World Climbing Capital — 4,000+ Routes

Kalymnos is one of the world’s premier sport-climbing destinations · the limestone cliffs around the island, particularly on the W coast at Massouri and around Palionisos Bay, hold over 4,000 bolted routes. Climbers from around the world arrive in spring (April-May) and autumn (September-November) for the cooler temperatures · the island has restructured around the climbing economy in the 21st century. Pothia town itself has multiple climbing shops and gear rentals.

Pothia — The Capital Town

Pothia climbs the hillside above the harbour in dense whitewashed and pastel houses · the most photographed angle on Kalymnos is the harbour view back toward the town with the houses stacked on the hill behind. The waterfront has the sponge shops, the town quay, restaurants, and the daily working life of the largest Kalymnian community. The Pothia Archaeological Museum and the Maritime Museum (sponge-diving heritage) are both walking distance from the marina.

Italian Colonial Period — 1912-1947

Like the rest of the Dodecanese, Kalymnos was under Italian rule from 1912 to 1947 · the colonial period left some Italian-era public buildings in Pothia · the road network and town infrastructure date largely from this period. Kalymnos’s strategic position close to Turkey made it a key Italian naval-and-administrative outpost in the central Aegean.

Wind Strategy

NW Meltemi (summer prevailing): Strong NW winds usually prevail in summer · the high land of the island creates significant downdraft gusts into the port. The harbour basin itself is well-protected by the two moles · once inside you’re sheltered, but the approach and the gust effect on arrival need attention.

⚠ Within the marina: Even with the moles, gusts can reach the marina and ferry-generated swell adds to the bobbing · don’t expect glass-calm even in moderate Meltemi.

Best season: May-October sailing · climbing peak in October and April-May when temperatures are cooler.

Pro Tips for Pothia / Kalymnos Port

Contact Eleni in advance. WhatsApp +30 6980104127 · she runs the marina assistance · book a berth a day or two ahead in season.

Default to Kalymnos Marina. Government rates are low compared to private Aegean marinas · 25 berths · the practical choice for most visiting yachts.

Note where your anchor drops. No mooring lines · drop your own anchor and remember the position · helps for retrieval and for telling other arrivals where you are.

Plot the rocky islets and Cape Diapori farms. Both are non-trivial hazards · use the chartplotter and don’t take the approach lightly.

Arrive in daylight. The harbour lights are difficult to pick out against the city lights at night · daylight arrival keeps approach simple.

Be ready for Meltemi gusts in approach. The downdraft gusts off the high land can be sudden · don’t be caught with too much sail up · approach under reduced canvas if Meltemi is strong.

Visit the Maritime & Archaeological Museums. Walking distance from the marina · the sponge-diving heritage and the island’s broader history. Half-day shore visit.

Buy a real natural sponge. The sponge shops along the Pothia waterfront stock local-harvested natural sponges · the genuine product · proper bath and household use · much better quality than tourist gift-shop versions elsewhere.

Provision properly. Pothia has the best provisioning between Rhodes and the smaller central Dodecanese · stock up here before sailing for Tilos, Symi, or remote bays where shop-stocking is limited.

If clearing in from Turkey, call Eleni in advance. +30 2243 059402 · she handles e-TEPAI registration and clearing-in paperwork · saves significant time at arrival.
