Panteli Bay (Leros) — Castle, Windmills & 15 Mooring Buoys at the NE Coast

A large, deep, photogenic bay on the east coast of Leros — overlooked by the Byzantine + Knights’ Pandeli Castle and a row of traditional windmills. About 15 mooring buoys, a small fishing port, the capital village of Agia Marina at the head of the bay, and a 30-minute walk up to the windmills for the panoramic view that defines the postcard image of Leros. Open to E and S — a fair-weather bay with shelter from N–NW only.

Panteli Bay (also written Pandeli) is a large, deep bay on the east coast of Leros — the picturesque side of the island, opposite to the Italian-naval-base atmosphere of Lakki Bay. The capital village of Agia Marina sits at the NE corner, with the medieval Pandeli Castle and a row of traditional windmills crowning the hilltop above. Approach is straightforward, mooring is on buoys (about 15) booked via the local operator, and shore-time gives you castle, windmills, and a working capital village. The compromise: depths are 30 m in the middle, the bay is open to E and S, and summer brings crowds.

⚠ Reality check:

Bay is open to E and S · shelter from N–NW only · settled-weather choice

Depths 30 m in the middle · plan for deep-water mooring or pick up a buoy

Stay out of the swimming area marked with yellow buoys

Avoid anchoring on seaweed · sand patches only · long line ashore an option

Mooring buoys max LOA 15 m · larger yachts have to anchor

Crowded in summer · book a buoy in advance via WhatsApp

Approach & Visual Landmarks

Position: Panteli Bay opens to the E on the east coast of Leros · the capital village of Agia Marina sits at the NE corner of the bay · the bay is large and the entrance is wide.

Visual Landmarks on Approach

Agia Kyriaki rocky islet on the east side of the bay — the most distinctive seaward marker.

Cluster of houses at the NE = Agia Marina town · the capital of Leros.

Castle and windmills on the hilltop behind the bay · the panoramic backdrop and the most photogenic angle on Leros.

⚓ Anchoring & Mooring at Panteli

~15 Mooring Buoys · Max LOA 15m · Book via WhatsApp

Mooring Buoys — The Default Choice

Number of buoys: Around 15 mooring buoys available · operated by a local mooring service · book in advance.

Max LOA: 15 m · larger yachts must anchor instead.

Booking: The local mooring operator at the bay handles assignments · contact ahead of time.

Phone: +30 22470 24766

Mobile: +30 69777 78440

Booking method: WhatsApp via the mobile number is the easiest way to confirm a buoy.

Anchoring · 30m Middle · Long Line Ashore Option

Anchoring — Yachts Over 15 m or No Buoy Available

Depths: Approximately 30 m in the middle of the bay · this is a deep-water anchorage · use the edges where depths come up to anchorable range.

Bottom: Sand, rocks, and seaweed · ⚠ avoid anchoring on seaweed (poor holding + Posidonia is protected).

Long line ashore: A long line ashore is an option · gives more swinging-room control in this deep bay · use shore points where there’s clear access.

⚠ Swimming area: Stay out of the swimming area marked with yellow buoys. Local rule, locally enforced.

Wind & Shelter Strategy

N–NW shelter: Decent shelter from N and NW winds — including the summer Meltemi · the surrounding land blocks the dominant Aegean wind direction.

⚠ Even in N–NW shelter, swell can come in: The bay is large enough that wind-driven swell wraps around · expect some movement on the buoys even when the wind itself is blocked.

⚠ E and S exposure: The bay is open to E and S · any easterly or southerly brings waves directly into the anchorage · uncomfortable to dangerous · move to Marina Leros on the S coast or to Ormos Partheni on the N coast for shelter from these directions.

Best season: May, June, September, October give the cleanest weather windows · August is the peak crowding · settled summer Meltemi is the ideal.

⚓ Small Fishing Port (North of the Bay)

North of the Bay · Depths 2–7m · Open West

The Fishing Harbour

Position: A small fishing port at the north of Panteli Bay · primarily for local fishing boats.

Approach: Stay close to the breakwater on the way in.

Depths: 2–7 m · check the depth sounder · the shallower areas are at the back of the basin.

⚠ Open W: The fishing port is open to the W · westerly winds bring waves into the basin · use only when conditions favour.

Pandeli Castle, Windmills & the Capital Village

Pandeli Castle (Kastro)

The medieval fortress crowning the hilltop above Panteli Bay is the Pandeli Castle (locally Kastro tis Lerou · “Castle of Leros”). The site has been fortified since Byzantine times — a defensive stronghold against Arab and pirate raids — and the current walls are largely the work of the Knights of St John who held the island from the 14th century until the Ottoman conquest in 1522. The castle includes the chapel of Panagia tou Kastrou (Virgin Mary of the Castle) which is still in use. Panoramic 360° views over the bay, the eastern coast, and across to Turkey on a clear day.

Off-season opening: Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday · check current hours locally before going up · summer hours are usually more extensive.

The Windmills (Mylos) — 30-Minute Walk Up

Just below the castle, on the same hilltop ridge, stands the famous row of stone windmills — traditional Aegean grain mills · most are restored exteriors today (not working windmills). The walk up from the bay takes about 30 minutes and the panoramic view from the windmill terrace is the iconic Leros image — the bay below, Agia Marina spread along the head, the castle to one side, and the open Aegean stretching east. The single most-photographed spot on the island.

Agia Marina — The Capital Village

Agia Marina is the official capital of Leros and the working community at the head of Panteli Bay. Tavernas line the seafront · the small main square sits one street back from the water · whitewashed houses climb the hillside towards the castle. Compared to the planned Italian Rationalist Lakki on the south coast, Agia Marina is the older organic Greek-village side of Leros — narrow lanes, traditional houses, the kind of village you walk through after dinner.

Old vs New — Two Faces of Leros

Panteli + Agia Marina is the old Greek-village side of Leros · the medieval castle, the windmills, the working capital, the narrow lanes, the family tavernas at the seafront. Lakki on the south coast is the new Italian-built side · planned wide boulevards, Mussolini-era civic buildings, the Italian Rationalist architecture. Sailing both sides in one Leros visit gives you 700 years of architectural and cultural history in 5 NM of coastline. There aren’t many islands where the contrast is this stark.

Shore-Life at Panteli

Beach & swim facilities: The Panteli beach has shower facilities · several beach hotels along the front offer drinks and amenities (open to walk-in customers · easy stop after a swim).

Tavernas: Multiple seafront tavernas at Agia Marina and around the bay · walk the front and pick what looks good. The Greek-village dinner-on-the-water experience that contrasts with the planned-architecture Lakki feel.

Walks: The 30-minute climb to the windmills + castle is the standard Panteli shore activity · do it for sunset for the iconic photo.

Pro Tips for Panteli Bay

Book a buoy via WhatsApp ahead. 15 buoys + summer crowds = book in advance · WhatsApp the mobile number (+30 69777 78440) the day before to confirm.

Plot Agia Kyriaki islet on approach. The rocky islet on the E is the visual landmark · steer to keep it to port as you enter the bay.

Watch the wind forecast carefully. Open to E and S · don’t overnight in any easterly · move to Marina Leros (Lakki) on the south for shelter.

Walk up to the windmills for sunset. 30-minute climb · golden-hour panoramic view · the iconic Leros photo. Bring water + comfortable shoes.

Time the castle visit. Off-season Wed/Sat/Sun · summer hours usually more extensive · check locally · combines well with the windmills walk for one hilltop excursion.

Stay out of the yellow-buoy swim area. Locally enforced · approach and anchor outside it · move to a buoy or anchor on the edges.

Pair Panteli with Lakki for the full Leros experience. Panteli for the Greek-village + medieval castle side · Lakki for the Italian Rationalist + naval-history side · 5 NM around the island gets you both. The two-faced Leros visit.

Anchor with long line ashore if no buoy. Deep water in middle (30 m) makes pure anchoring difficult · long line ashore at one of the bay’s edges gives you the swinging-room control you need.

Yachts over 15 m: anchor instead. The mooring buoys are LOA-limited at 15 m · larger yachts must anchor on the edges or use the long-line-ashore option.
