Palionisos Bay (Kalymnos) — Climbing-Country Cove with Lines Ashore & 17 Taverna Mooring Buoys
A small NE-coast hamlet of a few stone farmhouses surrounded by the pitted limestone cliffs that made Kalymnos a world climbing destination. Two local tavernas (Ilias and Kalidonis) have laid 17 mooring buoys for their customers · the alternative is anchoring with lines ashore. Good shelter except from southerlies. Max LOA 19 m. Book ahead in season and arrive early.
Palionisos Bay is a small hamlet on the northeast coast of Kalymnos — just a few stone farmhouses set against the pitted limestone cliffs that have made Kalymnos one of the world’s premier sport-climbing destinations. The bay offers swimming, snorkelling, climbing access from the water, and the local-arrangement charm of having two tavernas that have each laid mooring buoys for their customers — book a buoy with one of them or anchor in the bay with lines ashore. Reality: limited berths, holding is poor on the rocky bottom, and southerlies blow straight in.
⚠ Reality check:
→ Bottom is rocks under thin sand+weed · poor holding for anchor · take a mooring buoy if available
→ Lines ashore strongly recommended · narrow bay · stops swing
→ Open to S winds · move on if a southerly is forecast
→ Max LOA 19 m · larger yachts won’t fit comfortably
→ Crowded in season · book a buoy in advance + arrive early

⚓ Anchoring at Palionisos
Lines Ashore · Poor Holding · Narrow Bay
If You’re Anchoring
Bottom: Rocks covered by a thin layer of sand and weed · this gives poor holding · don’t trust the anchor on its own.
Procedure: Anchor with lines ashore · this is the standard procedure for the bay · stops swing in the narrow space and lets you tie off to the rocks on the shore.
Where to drop: Look for sand patches between the rocky areas · move and reset if your first attempt doesn’t bite.
⚠ Don’t anchor on seagrass: Posidonia patches are protected · plus the holding is poor on grass.
⚠ Max LOA 19 m: Larger yachts can’t fit comfortably with lines ashore in this bay.
⚓ The 17 Taverna Mooring Buoys
Two local tavernas have laid mooring buoys in the bay for their customers — the practical alternative to anchoring on the poor-holding rock bottom. Book in advance and arrive early in season · the bay can fill up.

How the system works: The buoys belong to the tavernas and are intended for their dining customers · pick up a buoy and you’re expected to eat dinner ashore at that taverna. This is the standard local arrangement at remote Greek-island bays. Total of 17 buoys · the bay can fill up · book ahead in season.
Kalymnos & the Climbing World
Limestone Cliffs & the Pitted Rock
The cliffs around Palionisos and across Kalymnos are pitted limestone — the rock has been weathered into the textured, hand-and-foot-grippable surface that climbers worldwide travel here for. 4,000+ bolted sport-climbing routes across the island make Kalymnos one of the world’s premier climbing destinations · climbers arrive in spring and autumn for the cooler temperatures · the island has restructured around the climbing economy in the 21st century. Palionisos itself has climbing routes on the cliffs above the bay · expect to see climbers if you visit in shoulder season.
Snorkelling & Swimming
The bay’s clear water and rocky bottom give good snorkelling around the edges · swim from your moored yacht · the steep sides of the bay drop quickly to deeper water and the rocky structures hold typical Aegean fish life.
The Hamlet — A Few Farmhouses
Palionisos is barely a village — just a handful of stone farmhouses, the two tavernas, and the agricultural valley running up into the hills. The contrast with the busy Kalymnos Port on the south side of the island is the appeal · this is the isolated NE-coast experience.
Wind Strategy at Palionisos
Meltemi (NW summer): Good shelter from the prevailing summer wind · the bay is tucked behind the NE coast headlands · this is the practical use-case for Palionisos.
⚠ S winds: The bay is open to southerlies · any S wind component sends waves into the bay · move to Kalymnos Port on the S side or to Leros if a serious southerly is forecast.
Best season: Late spring through early autumn for sailing · climbing peak in October and April-May.
Pro Tips for Palionisos
Phone ahead for a buoy. +30 6948607612 (Nomiki, Ilias orange buoys) or +30 6948945936 (Kalidonis white buoys) · book a day or two in advance in season.
Arrive early in season. The bay fills · 17 buoys + limited anchoring space · midday-arrival means competing for the last spots.
Use lines ashore if anchoring. The poor-holding rocky bottom + narrow bay = anchor only with shore lines · don’t trust the anchor on its own.
Eat ashore if you take a buoy. The tavernas lay the buoys for their dining customers · this is the standard local arrangement at remote Greek-island bays.
Bring flip-flops to the beach. The shore is covered with small stones — uncomfortable on bare feet · flip-flops or sandals essential.
Move on if S winds forecast. The bay is exposed to southerlies · don’t get caught in a S-wind shift overnight.
Try the climbing if conditions allow. Palionisos has bolted routes on the cliffs above · check climbing-route databases like thecrag.com for current information · proper gear required.
Pair with Kalymnos Port. Palionisos for a quiet NE-coast overnight + climbing · Kalymnos Port for provisioning, sponge-diver heritage, and main island services. Two halves of Kalymnos in one charter visit.

“Palionisos is the small NE-coast hamlet on Kalymnos where two tavernas have laid seventeen mooring buoys for their dining customers — phone Nomiki at Ilias for the orange ones, the Kalidonis number for the white ones, and book ahead in season because the bay fills. The pitted limestone cliffs above the bay are part of the climbing world that has restructured Kalymnos in the 21st century. The bottom is rocks under thin sand and weed so anchoring needs lines ashore, southerlies blow straight in, and the experience is the working remote-Greek-bay arrangement at its most authentic.”
