The Aeolian Islands lie 15–50 nautical miles off the north coast of Sicily. Your choice of charter base affects how much sailing time you spend just getting there and back — and which islands are realistically within a week’s range. The main Sicilian bases are Portorosa (the closest and most common), Milazzo, and Capo d’Orlando. Each has different trade-offs in distance, facilities, and access to the islands.

Portorosa — Closest & Most Common Base
Marina di Portorosa (Furnari/Tonnarella, Gulf of Patti) is the largest marina in Sicily — 700 berths, Blue Flag since 1993 — and the closest mainland departure point to the Aeolians at just 15 nm from Vulcano. Most major charter operators (Sunsail, Sailogy, and independent bases) are based here. The marina functions as a small resort village with hotels, restaurants, a supermarket, and fuel. Views of Etna on clear days.

️ Wind Notes for the Sicily–Aeolians Passage
The typical summer wind is NW Maestrale — which means the outbound passage (Portorosa to Vulcano, heading NW) is usually into the wind, and the return (heading SE back to Sicily) is downwind. Plan early morning departures for the outbound passages to build in buffer time before the afternoon Maestrale builds. The return passages are generally easier and faster.
⚠ Ferry traffic: The Milazzo–Aeolian Islands ferry route passes north of Portorosa. Stay outside ferry lanes when approaching or departing. Hydrofoils move fast and have limited manoeuvring ability — they do not give way easily.
Sailor’s tip: Provision thoroughly at Portorosa before departure — the on-site supermarket is adequate but the larger supermarket 5 minutes by car is better. Fill fuel at the marina quay. The only fully reliable fuel stop between Portorosa and Stromboli is Lipari’s Marina Lunga. Water tanks should be full on departure — island water is limited and expensive. Your boat will likely be covered in a light layer of volcanic dust after Stromboli — it rinses off completely without leaving marks.
