Marina di Portorosa is the largest marina in Sicily and the primary charter base for sailing the Aeolian Islands. Built in 1992 in the Gulf of Patti on Sicily’s north coast, it sits almost directly south of the Aeolian archipelago — just 15 nautical miles from Vulcano, the southernmost island. It has held a Blue Flag for water quality since 1993. The marina functions as a self-contained village with hotels, restaurants, shops, and a supermarket all within the complex — everything you need for provisioning and preparation before departure.

Approach & Navigation
The marina lies between Capo Tindari to the west and Capo Milazzo to the east, in the Gulf of Patti. The entrance is well-marked and protected by a breakwater. Approach from the north is straightforward in most conditions.
⚠ NW wind & swell warning: Access into the marina can be problematic in NW winds and associated swell — the entrance faces NW. In strong Maestrale conditions, approach with caution or wait for a lull. For sailors coming from the west (from Capo Tindari direction), advance well offshore as the port access lights may appear confusingly positioned at an angle.

Sailor’s tip: Pre-provision at the larger supermarket 5 minutes by car before departure — provisioning options on the Aeolian Islands themselves are limited and expensive, especially on Stromboli, Panarea, and Alicudi. Stock up on water, wine, and food for at least 2–3 days at Portorosa. Also: fuel up here before leaving — fuel on the islands is harder to find and pricier.

️ Wind & Weather
The Aeolian Islands are named after Aeolus, the Greek god of the winds — for good reason. The typical summer pattern is NW Maestrale (Mistral), occasionally shifting to Ponente (W). Other winds include Tramontana (N), Gregale (NE), Levante (E), Scirocco (SE), and Libeccio (SW). Squalls among the islands are possible but rarely long-lasting. The Aeolians are rated a Level 2 sailing area — suitable for experienced sailors, not beginners.
