Vulcano Island, Sicily – Where to Dock & Things to Do

Vulcano Island offers several docking options depending on wind direction, as well as a variety of activities to enjoy during your stay.

Docking Options

Gelso Bay

Suitable for docking in calm weather conditions. Anchor off the beach to the northeast of the jetty in depths between 3-10 meters. The bottom is rocky, and depths drop off quickly.

Porto Di Levante

Located on the east side of the island, north of the ferry terminal. You can anchor clear of the moorings. This bay is well-protected from northern and western winds. The bottom is sandy with good holding, especially in the northern part of the bay. It’s possible to tie the dinghy to the restaurant platform for easy access to the island’s amenities.

Porto Di Ponente

Things to Do on Vulcano Island

Hiking to the Crater

One of the must-do activities on Vulcano Island is a hike to the active maw of the volcano. The hike takes about an hour, covering roughly 800 meters, leading to a spectacular view of the entire chain of Aeolian Islands to the north and Sicily to the south. The mountain emits a steady stream of sulfuric fumes, adding to the unique experience.

Mud Baths & Hot Springs

Near the Black Sand Beach, you can soak in natural mud pools and hot springs bubbling from the ground. Afterward, you can pay for showers located nearby. This is a popular activity for visitors looking to relax and enjoy the island’s natural therapeutic offerings.

Exploring Porto Di Levante

Porto Di Levante is the hub of activity on the island. Here, you’ll find a supermarket, a fruit and vegetable store, and several restaurants. If you need fuel, it’s only available at the gas station via jerry cans. Scuba diving and paragliding enthusiasts will find active clubs in this area.

Island Tour

Rent a light car or scooter to explore the island’s 40 kilometers of paved roads. The tour will take you to observation points with stunning views of all seven Aeolian Islands. The island’s roads offer a comprehensive view of the local life and the island’s natural beauty.
