Phuket Yacht Haven Marina — The NE-Coast Charter Base & Superyacht Hub

08°10.2’N · 098°20.5’E · Laem Phrao on the NE coast of Phuket · 10 minutes from Phuket International Airport · 320 berths accommodating vessels from 3 m up to 100 m+ LOA · VHF Ch 68 · the largest and most established superyacht-grade marina in the Andaman Sea, facing the channel that separates Phuket from the mainland with the Sarasin Bridge to the W and Phang Nga Bay opening to the E.

Phuket Yacht Haven sits at the very NE tip of Phuket island at Laem Phrao, in the channel between Phuket and the Thai mainland. The marina is one of the most established sailing infrastructure in the Andaman Sea — 320 fully-serviced berths, a 30 m fuel dock, full superyacht-grade facilities, and the practical advantage of being just 10 minutes from Phuket International Airport (HKT). Position-wise this is the natural starting point for charter routes east into Phang Nga Bay (James Bond Island, the hongs), south to Phi Phi and Lanta, or further south to the Trang islands and Ko Rok. The marina is fully accessible from the east on all tides — no high-tide restriction like its sister marinas Boat Lagoon or Krabi Boat Lagoon.

⚠ Reality check:

SE approach is the practical entry · the W approach has height/depth restrictions and requires local knowledge

⚠ Yachts cannot pass under the Sarasin Bridge · the channel between Phuket and the mainland is closed to sailing yachts via the W

Night approach is not advised without sound local knowledge

Strong tides can run in the channel · be sure tide isn’t pushing you off track and into danger on approach

Book in advance in peak NE-monsoon season (Nov-Apr) · the marina fills up

Approach & Navigation

SE Approach (Daytime · Recommended)

From the SE — All Tides

1. Approach Koh Ngam on a bearing due west (270°).

2. Pass Koh Ngam keeping it to port.

3. Sight the northern power pylon — the visual landmark.

4. Keep Koh Ngam astern and steer ~320° towards the pylon.

5. Look for red and green channel buoys marking the marina entrance.

6. Follow the IALA system: red to port, green to starboard on entry.

⚠ W Approach — Local Knowledge Only

From the West — Restricted

Sarasin Bridge: The bridge connecting Phuket to the mainland sits west of the marina. Sailing yachts cannot pass under the Sarasin Bridge or enter the channel from the W.

Why it matters: Charter operators emphasise this — the only practical entry/exit is from the SE around Koh Ngam.

⚠ Night Approach — Not Advised

After Dark

Night approaches require sound local knowledge of the channel buoys and tidal stream patterns. Plan to arrive in daylight — if running late, consider anchoring in a sheltered bay nearby and entering the marina the following morning.

Marina Facilities

Berthing & Power

320 fully-serviced berths · all with single or 3-phase power, water, and Wi-Fi at the dock · capacities from 220V/63A single phase up to 250A 3-phase for superyachts · 24/7 security with manned guards and CCTV · security card system for shore access. The 260 m pontoon plus three 50 m fingers were installed in 2015. The outer dock wave attenuator can cater to 30 superyachts up to 70 m with drafts up to 5 m.

Fuel & Water

30 m fuel dock with 40,000 L capacity · 400 L/min flow rate · uses PTT fuels · fresh water delivery available at all berths. The fuel dock and water service are key reasons charter yachts return here for turnover even when based elsewhere.

Services Ashore

Clubhouse with bar and restaurant · marina office · dockside service companies and yacht brokers · showers, lockers, toilets · rent-a-car, tour, and taxi operators · MCA-approved engineering workshops. The Galileo Maritime Academy professional crew school sits on the top road with a survival training pool and advanced fire-fighting facilities.

Provisioning Strategy

There are no marinas available throughout your cruise after leaving Yacht Haven — provisioning before departure is essential. The marina office can arrange a taxi to a large supermarket (Tesco Lotus / Big C / Villa Market in Phuket) — typically a 25-30 minute ride. Stock up on water, ice, dry goods, fruit and vegetables before sailing east into Phang Nga Bay.

Pro Tips for Yacht Haven

Approach in daylight from the SE. The W approach is restricted by the Sarasin Bridge · plan your arrival time to give a buffer against tide and wind delays.

Call ahead on Ch 68. Marina staff will direct you to your berth and meet you on the dock — avoids guesswork in a 320-berth marina.

Use the airport proximity for crew rotation. 10 minutes by taxi to HKT — the easiest crew handover in the Andaman Sea.

Provision in Phuket Town, not at the marina. The marina has a small chandlery but for serious provisioning take a taxi to one of the larger supermarkets.

Check Phuket tide tables. Tides in the channel can run strong — use the Hydrographic Department of Thailand tide tables before any approach. Thai Hydrographic Department

Sail east first, west on return. The natural Phuket charter route runs east into Phang Nga Bay first (Ko Phanak hongs, Ko Hong, James Bond Island), then south to Phi Phi and Lanta. Yacht Haven is the natural turnaround point.

Routes from Yacht Haven

E into Phang Nga Bay: ~10-15 NM E to Ko Phanak, Ko Hong, James Bond Island. See Phang Nga Bay anchorages.

SE to Krabi: ~30 NM SE to the Krabi mainland (Ao Nang, Railay). See Krabi Coast.

S to Phi Phi: ~30 NM S to Ko Phi Phi Don. See Ko Phi Phi Don.

Starting Your Andaman Charter?

Phuket Yacht Haven · 320 berths · 10 minutes from HKT airport · the natural starting point for charters east into Phang Nga Bay or south to Phi Phi and Lanta. SE approach only · VHF Ch 68 · book ahead in NE-monsoon season.

Phang Nga E  ·  Phi Phi S  ·  Full Route

“Phuket Yacht Haven sits at the very NE tip of Phuket island at Laem Phrao, ten minutes from the airport and three hundred and twenty berths strong — the natural starting point for charter routes east into Phang Nga Bay’s limestone hongs, south to Phi Phi and Lanta, or further south to the Trang islands and Ko Rok. Approach from the SE around Koh Ngam on a course of three hundred and twenty degrees toward the northern power pylon, follow the IALA buoys at the entrance, call the marina on channel sixty-eight, and the Andaman Sea charter opens up. The W approach is closed — yachts cannot pass under the Sarasin Bridge — so this is a one-way entry, and a one-way exit, and the most established sailing infrastructure in the Andaman Sea regardless.”
