Vasiliki, Lefkada — Sailing & Mooring Guide

A sheltered bay on the south coast of Lefkada — windsurfer capital of the Ionian, growing charter base, and one of the few places on the island where the wind blows reliably into the harbour.

Vasiliki sits on the south coast of Lefkada, in a wide bay framed by cliffs and the white lighthouse of Cape Doukato to the west. The bay is famous in two contexts: as one of the most reliable windsurfing destinations in the Mediterranean (Eric Beale’s wind funnel), and as a growing charter base with new marina facilities under development.

For sailors, this means a place with honest local wind. The geography of the bay creates a strong afternoon thermal that funnels onto the south shore — F4–F5 by 14:00 in summer, predictable enough to base a windsurfing industry on. Mooring is sheltered by the inner harbour, but the gusts in the bay are the real story. From Vasiliki, you’re well-positioned for runs to Kefalonia, Ithaca, or back north to Nidri and Lefkas Town.

⚠ Reality check: The afternoon thermal that makes Vasiliki famous for windsurfing is also the reason you need to anchor properly. Strong gusts blow into the bay daily in summer. With strong southerlies, surge develops in the inner harbour. Set the anchor as if F5 is coming — because it is.

Approach & Wind Notes

Visual landmarks

From offshore: The white lighthouse on Cape Doukato (Ak Doukato — the SW tip of Lefkada) is the key landmark. Visible from a long way out.

From the east: The houses of Pondi village become visible before you’re fully into the bay — they line the eastern shore and mark the entrance.

Once in the bay: The town of Vasiliki is at the head, with the inner harbour and breakwater on the south side.

The Vasiliki thermal

The bay’s geometry — open to the SW, framed by the cape and the mountains behind — creates one of the most reliable afternoon thermals in the Ionian. Light to F2 in the morning; building from 11:00; F4–F5 dominant by 14:00; settling after 19:00. This is why every windsurfing operator in the Ionian has a base at Pondi.

Strong gusts

With the prevailing wind at peak strength, gusts in the bay can be significantly higher than the average. Set the anchor properly the first time and check the bite — the gusts will test it.

⚓ Mooring Options

South Quay · Inner Harbour · Most Common

Stern-to the South Quay (Inner Harbour)

The standard charter spot — stern-to with own anchor on the south side of the inner harbour. Sheltered from the prevailing afternoon wind by the breakwater.

Berthing: Stern-to with own anchor. Tight quay layout — multiple charter boats squeezed in during peak season.

Best for: Quick overnight, full town access, restaurant dinners.

⚠ Watch: With strong southerlies, surge develops in the inner harbour — boats work their lines. Long stern lines and snubbers help.

North Side · Alongside · Limited Spots

Alongside on the North Side of the Entrance

A few alongside spots on the north side of the harbour entrance. Useful when the inner harbour quay is full.

Berthing: Alongside with own lines. Limited spots — first come, first served.

⚠ Watch: More exposed to wash from incoming/departing boats. Less protected from the afternoon thermal.

Bay Anchorage · Calm Weather Only

Anchor in the Bay (Calm Days)

In calm weather, anchoring is possible in the wider bay — gives you space and a quieter night. Not viable in any normal afternoon thermal.

Anchoring: Drop in 6–10 m on sand. Watch the bottom — patchy with weed in some sections.

⚠ Watch: The bay funnels the afternoon wind. Strong gusts develop daily. If you’re anchored at 13:00, expect to be working the anchor by 15:00. Move into the inner harbour before the thermal builds.

New marina under construction: A new marina has been planned and is at various stages of development. Check current status on arrival — once complete, it will significantly expand berthing capacity. Until then, the existing inner harbour is the only option.

Facilities & Shore

Water: Water meter on the quay — token-operated. Bring tokens or arrange with the harbour master.

Fuel: No quay-side pump — fuel delivered by tanker. Call ahead to arrange in season.

Provisioning: Small supermarkets in Vasiliki village — fine for basics. For full provisioning, head to Lefkas Town or Sami.

Tavernas, cafés, shops: Multiple along the waterfront. The town is small but has the basic charter-base infrastructure.

Windsurfing schools: Multiple operators based at Pondi (eastern side of the bay) — useful if your crew wants to take a windsurfing day off.

Local information & activities: The local tourist information page vasiliki.eu/what-can-i-do lists current operators, hiking routes, beach options, and seasonal events.

Where to Eat — Sailors’ Picks

Vasiliki has a relaxed waterfront restaurant scene — driven by the windsurfer crowd, the village stays lively into the evening. Standards are reasonable; the better kitchens are usually a few steps back from the immediate quay.

Fondi

A waterfront classic — Greek menu, fresh fish, family-run service. [link]

Pro Tips for Vasiliki

Arrive early. Get into the inner harbour before 13:00 to avoid the building thermal. Once it’s blowing F4+ in the bay, the manoeuvre into a tight quay slot becomes much harder.

Anchor for the gust, not the wind. Don’t trust an anchor set in light morning air — the afternoon F5 will test it. Reverse hard, snorkel, confirm.

Take a windsurf lesson. If your crew has a curious member, a half-day windsurf session at Pondi is one of the most reliable wind-school experiences anywhere. Multiple operators rent gear and teach beginners.

Watch the live cam before you commit. The live camera at meteolive.gr/p/lefkada shows current wind and water state — useful before approaching in unsettled weather.

Walk to Porto Katsiki by car. A 20-minute drive west takes you to Porto Katsiki — one of the most spectacular beaches in Greece. Inaccessible from Vasiliki by sea overnight (open to the prevailing wind), but easy to visit ashore for a half-day.

Suggested Routes from Vasiliki

South to Fiskardo (25 NM)

A solid charter day south to Fiskardo on the north tip of Kefalonia. The most photographed harbour in the Ionian.

SE to Ithaca

A 20 NM run SE to Kioni on Ithaca, or further south to Vathy. Comfortable on the prevailing NW wind.

NE to Nidri (15 NM)

Round Cape Doukato and back up the east coast to Nidri. Beat into the afternoon thermal — plan an early start.

North to Lefkas Town (30 NM)

Round Cape Doukato, up the east coast, through the canal to Lefkas Town or Lefkas Marina — full charter-base services for trip end.

East to Kalamos & Kastos

A 12 NM run east-southeast to Kastos — quietest overnight in the area.
