Agios Nikolaos & Blue Caves, Zakynthos — Sailing Guide

A working ferry bay and a cluster of sea caves on the northern tip of Zakynthos — spectacular by morning, choppy with tour boats by afternoon, and edged by a tidal current that catches sailors who don’t expect it.

The northern tip of Zakynthos hosts two of the island’s most-photographed features sitting close together: Agios Nikolaos Bay, a working harbour with a small ferry to Pessada on Kefalonia, and the Blue Caves just north of it — a series of arched sea caves where sunlight refracts through clear water against pale limestone.

For sailors, this is best understood as a morning destination. Drop into the Blue Caves area early when the light is right and the trip-boat fleet hasn’t arrived yet; visit Agios Nikolaos for fuel or a meal; move on before the afternoon thermal builds. Both anchorages are exposed, both get crowded, and the current at the very tip of the island can run up to 4 knots — small details that turn what looks easy on a chart into something more demanding underway.

⚠ Reality check: A reef and shoal water sits at the north entrance to Agios Nikolaos. A current of up to 4 knots can run SE of the islet at the very tip of Zakynthos. The depth in the bay drops off so quickly that a poorly placed anchor sits in 30 m of water without you realising. None of this is a chart-only hazard — plan the approach.

Approach & Hazards

Two entrances to Agios Nikolaos

The bay has a small islet at its mouth. You can enter from either side of the islet — the south entrance is the cleaner approach in most conditions. The north entrance has a reef and shoal water that catches sailors who try to slip between the islet and the shore. If in doubt, go round the south.

The 4-knot current

Southeast of the islet at the very tip of Zakynthos, a tidal current can run up to 4 knots. It’s not always present, but when it is, it pushes you onto the rocks south of the bay if you’re not aware of it. Account for set when plotting your approach — and especially when leaving the Blue Caves area in light air.

Depth drops off fast

Agios Nikolaos bay has very steep underwater terrain — the depth goes from 5 m to 30 m within a boat-length. If you drop the anchor casually you can find yourself with 60 m of chain out and still no bite. Approach the quay positions carefully and watch the depth gauge.

Night approach not recommended

First-time night arrivals to this corner of the island are not advised. The reef, the current, the lack of clear leading lights, and the busy traffic in summer all combine to make it a daytime-only entrance.

⚓ Anchorages & Mooring

Agios Nikolaos · 37°54.23’N · 20°42.26’E

Agios Nikolaos Bay

A working harbour on the northern end of Zakynthos — small ferry quay (Pessada-Kefalonia route, weather-dependent), tour-boat operators, fishing fleet, and a handful of waterfront tavernas.

Berthing — south side: Stern-to on the south side of the bay where directed. Generally calmer than the ferry side.

Berthing — north of ferry quay: Stern-to north of the ferry quay. Useful when the south is full but exposed to ferry wash.

Anchoring inside the bay: Possible but uncomfortable. Tour-boat traffic, ferry wash, and swell all enter the bay through the day. Set the anchor carefully and don’t expect a peaceful overnight.

⚠ Watch: The ferry quay slot changes depending on weather — check with port staff or local knowledge before assuming. The depth shelf means a misjudged drop puts you off the chain quickly.

Blue Caves · 37°55.46’N · 20°42.20’E

Blue Caves Anchorage

A short distance north of Agios Nikolaos, the cliffs along the NE coast are pierced by a series of sea caves and arches. Spectacular morning light through the clear water — turquoise refractions on the cave walls. Best visited by dinghy from a temporary anchorage.

Anchoring: Drop on the southern corner of the cliff section in 7–9 m on sand, with a long line ashore to a fixed rock. The bay is open and shelter is moderate at best.

Cave touring: Use the dinghy. The largest arch is big enough to motor into; the smaller caves require careful manoeuvring. Stay out of the way of trip boats — they have right of way and they’re moving fast.

⚠ Watch: Tour-boat traffic is constant from 10:00 to 16:00 — wakes, noise, queues at the cave entrances. For photos and a quiet visit, arrive at 08:00. Not a viable overnight stop.

Facilities at Agios Nikolaos

Water: Available at the quay but not potable — for drinking, buy bottled in the village or top up at Port Zakynthos.

Fuel: Delivered by tanker — call ahead to arrange in advance. No quay-side pump.

Trash: Disposal point at the SE corner of the bay.

Provisioning: Limited — small village shops only. For real provisioning, head to Port Zakynthos on the east coast.

Restaurants: A handful of waterfront tavernas serve the day-tripper traffic. Standards reasonable; nothing exceptional. Better food at Zakynthos Town.

Ferry: Small passenger ferry runs to Pessada on Kefalonia in season — useful if a crew member needs to get north or south by land.

Ashore — Eating Notes

Potamitis Windmill

A long-running family taverna with a converted windmill on the cliff above the Blue Caves area — accessible by road, not by boat. If the crew is driving and you have time, the views over the caves at sunset are unmatched. Map: g.page/potamitis-windmill. €€

Agios Nikolaos waterfront tavernas

A cluster along the harbour front. Standard Greek meze and fish, busy with day-trippers in season. For one specific recommendation see this taverna on the waterfront. €€

Pro Tips for Agios Nikolaos & Blue Caves

Caves at 08:00, not 14:00. The trip-boat fleet from Zakynthos Town and Cape Skinari arrives 10:00–16:00. For unobstructed cave photos and clear water, arrive at first light.

South entrance preferred. Unless you have local knowledge, the south side of the islet is the cleaner approach to Agios Nikolaos. The north entrance reef catches first-time sailors regularly.

Don’t drink the quay water. Brackish or non-potable from Agios Nikolaos. Refill drinking water at Port Zakynthos or before you leave Kefalonia.

Plan to leave by 14:00. Anchoring overnight here is doable but uncomfortable — the swell and tour-boat wash continue into the evening. Better overnight options at Port Zakynthos south, or Sami across the channel.

Account for the current. When leaving the Blue Caves area heading north or NE, check the GPS-vs-compass course — set from the 4-knot current can be significant in light air.

Suggested Routes

South to Port Zakynthos

A 15 NM run south down the east coast to Port Zakynthos — the natural overnight after a Blue Caves morning. Generally a sheltered run on the east-coast lee.

South down the west coast

For a circumnavigation: down the wild west coast past Porto Vromi and Shipwreck Beach to Lagana Bay Marine Park. Calm-day morning only — west coast exposed.

North to Kefalonia

An open-water passage of 8–10 NM across to Sami Marina on the east coast of Kefalonia. Plan an early start — channel can build NW chop quickly.
