Lefkas Town Quay — Sailing & Mooring Guide

The free public quay at the head of the Lefkas canal — directly in the heart of town, more local than the marina, and the gateway through the floating bridge to the inner Ionian.

Lefkas Town sits at the northern end of Lefkada island, separated from the Greek mainland by a narrow dredged channel and a floating bridge. It’s one of the main sailing hubs in the Ionian — both a charter starting point and a return base for the routes south through Nidri, Meganisi, and beyond.

There are two distinct sailor options here: the commercial marina (D-Marin) on one side of the harbour, and the town quay — the public port — on the other. The marina is modern, fully serviced, with laid lines and showers; the town quay is rougher, free or low-cost, and places you directly in the heart of the old town. This page is about the town quay. For the marina, see our Lefkas Marina dedicated guide.

⚠ Reality check: The Lefkas canal is a controlled passage with a swing bridge that opens hourly during daylight. Stay strictly within the buoyed channel — depths drop quickly outside the markers. Refuel before weekend departures: charter boats refilling on Friday afternoon can mean a long wait at the fuel dock.

Approach & the Lefkas Canal

Navigating the channel

Approaching Lefkas requires passing through a dredged and clearly marked channel that separates the island from the mainland. The route is straightforward in settled conditions but demands attention — depths outside the buoyed line drop quickly.

Follow the buoyed channel strictly — green buoys to starboard inbound

→ Maintain approximately 5 knots

→ Avoid drifting outside the markers — depths drop fast

→ Expect increased traffic, especially Fridays and weekends (charter changeover)

The floating bridge

A floating swing bridge opens hourly during daylight to let vessels pass between the canal and Drepanos Bay. Opening times vary slightly by season — monitor VHF Channel 12 for current schedule. Be lined up 15 minutes before the opening time. Late arrivals wait for the next hour.

A passage through history

The canal isn’t only practical — it’s also a journey through history. As you transit, you pass remains of Ottoman fortifications guarding the entrance, old Venetian structures once used as outposts, and views toward ancient Lefkas (Nerikos), visible from the hills above. This passage has connected sailors to the island for centuries.

⚓ Mooring — Two Options

Town Quay (Public Port) · This Page

Free / Low-Cost Public Quay

For a more local experience. Mooring stern-to with your own anchor or alongside in some sections. Places you directly in the heart of the town — restaurants, shops, and the old quarter all within a few minutes’ walk.

Berthing: Stern-to or anchor in the bay. Bottom is mud — generally good holding. No laid lines.

Services: Electricity and water available at most berths (depending on which spot you take). No showers directly on the quay. Floating pontoons accessible weekday mornings.

⚠ Watch: Quay can become busy in peak season — especially mid-week when charter boats overflow from the marina.

Lefkas Marina (D-Marin) · Alternative

Lefkas Marina (D-Marin) — Full Service

Modern, well-organized, ideal for crews seeking comfort and full services. Berths with laid mooring lines, electricity, water, showers, fuel, chandlery, and 620+ berths total.

Booking: Recommended in high season — call ahead or use VHF Ch. 69.

Full guide: Lefkas Marina dedicated SeaTV page for fees, layout, and contact details.

Facilities & Town Services

Provisioning: Multiple supermarkets within 5–10 minutes’ walk of the quay, full range of fresh produce, fish, meat, and chandlery basics.

Pharmacy & banks: Several of each in the town centre, all within walking distance.

Chandlery & marine supply: Several near the marina entrance — useful for parts and replacements before pushing south.

Weekly market: Saturday mornings — local produce, cheese, olive oil. Worth timing the stay around if you’re provisioning for a longer trip.

Fuel: Available at the marina entrance or via fuel trucks at the public port. Refuel before weekend departures — Friday afternoon queues can be long.

ATMs & cash: Multiple ATMs along the waterfront and in the town centre.

The Old Town & Eating Out

Wander the narrow streets behind the waterfront — small boutiques, cafés, simple tavernas in courtyards, and the kind of evening atmosphere that makes you regret booking a charter changeover the next morning. The waterfront is touristy; the better kitchens are a few streets back.

Old town tavernas

Greek classics done well — fresh seafood, grilled fish, traditional stews, regional cheeses, decent local wines. Ask at the marina office for current recommendations; small kitchens come and go but the area always has 4–5 reliable spots.

Waterfront dining

Wider menu, faster service, more touristy. Useful for the night you want to eat near the boat — a 30-second walk back instead of 10 minutes through the alleys.

Casual lunch & cafés

Lefkas has the widest café choice in the southern Ionian after Corfu town. Plenty of casual spots for a long coffee, pastry, or quick lunch between sails.

Beyond the Harbour — Local Experiences

Lefkada Micro Farm

A short drive from the port brings you to a different side of the island, where local farming traditions are still alive. Walk through the olive groves, taste local products, and join cooking experiences using fresh seasonal ingredients. An authentic way to connect with Lefkada beyond the marina. Map: Lefkada Micro Farm.

Karya Village

In the mountains of central Lefkada — a peaceful escape from the coastal heat. The central square, shaded by large plane trees, is perfect for a relaxed afternoon stop. The village is also known for its traditional embroidery and local craftsmanship — a slower, more traditional rhythm of life. Map: Karya Village.

Pro Tips for Lefkas Town Quay

Quay vs marina — pick by purpose. Marina for full services, comfort, and reliable berthing. Town quay for atmosphere, town centre access, and a more local feel. The walk between them is 10 minutes — you can use the marina for boat services and walk in to eat at the old town anyway.

Refuel before Friday. Charter changeover Friday/Saturday creates fuel-dock queues. Refuel Thursday afternoon and you’ll save an hour.

Time the bridge. Be lined up 15 minutes before the opening time. The opening is short and the next one is an hour away.

Saturday morning market. If your schedule allows, time a layover so you can hit the Saturday market — best stocking-up day for a southbound trip toward Nidri and Meganisi.

Rent a car for one day. The interior of Lefkada — Karya, Englouvi, the west-coast viewpoints to Porto Katsiki — can only be seen by road. One day-rental gives you the full island.
