Nidri, Lefkada — Sailing & Anchorage Guide
A busy charter town on the east coast of Lefkada — sheltered by an arc of small islands, with three distinct anchorages within a mile of each other for every type of stop.
Nidri (also spelt Nydri) sits on the east coast of Lefkada, sheltered behind the small archipelago of Cheloni, Sparti, Skropios, and Madouri islands. The natural shelter of this island arc — combined with the deep protected basin of Vlicho Bay just to the south — makes Nidri one of the most-used charter hubs in the southern Ionian, after Lefkas Marina itself.
For sailors, this stretch of coast offers three different anchorages within a mile of each other — the Nidri town quay, the quieter Tranquil Bay opposite the town, and the well-protected Vlicho Bay just south. Pick by purpose: town quay for restaurants and shops, Tranquil Bay for a quiet swim and sunset, Vlicho for proper shelter and yard services. All three drain into the same evening — dinghy across to dinner ashore in town.
⚠ Reality check: Nidri is not recommended as a first-time night arrival — the town is hidden behind the islands until you’re well inside, and the unmarked transitions between charter pontoons and the town quay are easy to misjudge in the dark. Plan a daylight first arrival, then return at any hour after.

Approach & Weather Notes
Approach from the north
Coming south from Lefkas Marina, the town of Nidri stays hidden until you’re close to the island arc. Look for Cheloni, Sparti, and Madouri — the small islands offshore — and Nidri appears as you draw level with them. Pass either side of the islands; the channel between Madouri and the Lefkada coast is clean.
Approach from the south
Coming north from Meganisi or Vasiliki, round the headland opposite Madouri and the town becomes visible. Vlicho Bay is the first option you’ll see — Nidri proper is just north.
Sheltered cruising water
The geography of the island arc and the inner Ionian generally make this stretch of coast some of the calmest cruising water in Greece. The prevailing NW thermal arrives muted — F3–F4 instead of the F5 you’d see in open channels. Comfortable sailing for any crew level.
Daytime first arrival
First-time night arrival to Nidri is not recommended. Charter-pontoon layouts have changed over the years; the town quay edge is hard to read in the dark; the small islands offshore confuse approaching radar. Arrive in daylight on the first visit.

The Town Quay & Charter Pontoons
The lively heart of the area — restaurants, bars, supermarkets, charter pontoons, water-taxi service to the small islands, and a busy quay-side with constant traffic. Several pontoons operate along the front, run by different operators. Stern-to or alongside as directed on arrival.
Berthing: Bottom is mud and weed — holding adequate but not great. Set carefully and check the bite. Multiple pontoons mean berthing arrangements vary; ask the marinaiero on arrival.
Shore: Restaurants, shops, banks, supermarkets, motorbike rental, water-taxi to Sparti and the other islands. The widest range of services in this part of the Ionian outside Lefkas town.
⚠ Watch: Very crowded in season — book ahead through your charter operator if possible. Wash from passing tour boats and water-taxis can be uncomfortable.
Tranquil Bay · 38°42.08’N · 20°42.47’E
Tranquil Bay (Opposite Nidri Town)
A small bay directly opposite Nidri on one of the islands offshore. Calmer than the town quay, with a nice swim spot, and dinghy access across the channel for dinner ashore.
Anchoring: Drop in 8–12 m on mud and weed. Take a long line ashore to the north side of the bay for a stable position.
Best for: Crews who want to sleep with no traffic noise and dinghy across to town for dinner. Quiet swim spot in the morning.
⚠ Watch: Day-tripper boats and water-taxis pass through during the day — wash can be steady. Proper line ashore makes this much more comfortable.
Vlicho Bay · 38°41.11’N · 20°42.15’E · 1 NM South of Nidri
Vlicho Bay (Best Shelter)
A near-landlocked bay south of Nidri — entered through a narrow channel, opening into a wide protected basin. The most sheltered overnight in the area, regularly used as a storm refuge by the local charter fleet. Boatyard at the head of the bay for repairs and winter storage.
Anchoring options:
→ NE side of the bay: 5–7 m, mud bottom, good holding
→ NW side off the boatyard: 5–6 m, clear sand patches
→ Off Vlicho village: 5–6 m, useful for a meal ashore
Stern alongside the mole: Possible on the outside in 2.5–3 m. Quiet, slightly exposed if weather builds.
⚠ Watch: The narrow entrance channel can be busy with charter boats coming and going — give way to vessels already in the channel and stay close to the centre line.
Where to Eat — Sailors’ Picks
Nidri has the largest concentration of waterfront restaurants in the area outside Lefkas town — Greek classics, fresh fish, multi-cuisine, and tourist-menu options. The waterfront row is touristy but quality is generally good; for the kind of slow Greek meal you remember, walk a couple of streets back.
Limanaki
In Vlicho village, near the boatyard. Family-run, simple, the kind of place you find when you’ve decided you’d rather not row across to Nidri. [link]
Vliho
A street back from the Nidri waterfront. More refined Greek cuisine, slightly higher prices, worth the short walk. [link]

Pro Tips for Nidri
Pick by purpose, not by default. Don’t just head for the town quay because everyone does. Tranquil Bay is much nicer for sleep and swim; Vlicho is much better for shelter and quiet. Town quay is for the night you want noise.
Charter book through your operator. Many of the Nidri pontoons are reserved for specific charter companies. Ask your operator before arrival — they can usually pre-book a slot.
Use Vlicho as a storm refuge. If a strong forecast develops, Vlicho’s narrow entrance and protected basin are the best shelter on this stretch of coast. Better than running back to Lefkas Marina in deteriorating conditions.
Long line ashore in Tranquil Bay. Don’t free-swing on a single anchor — the boats around you will be lining up. Take the line ashore to the north side and you’ll have a settled night.
Walk to the Onassis chapel viewpoint. Behind Vlicho village, a road leads up to a small chapel above the bay — 25-minute walk uphill, sweeping views over the Nidri archipelago and across to Meganisi. Best at sunset.
