Sailing Area: Nisyros Island

Sailing to Nisyros Island, Greece

Nisyros Island is located about 8 miles southeast of Kos. This round, small island offers several attractions worth visiting:

  • Volcano: Rent a car and drive early in the morning to the volcano (it is best to visit early in the morning or at twilight as it’s a hot area).
  • Nikia Village: Stroll around the village of Nikia, which has a lovely view.
  • Mandraki Town: Have lunch in Mandraki town, located northwest of the island. The excellent fish restaurants we loved are Geusea and Kleanthis.

Mandraki port has a daily ferry to Kos (in season). The port is small and open to the northeast, and space is limited, but note: in calm weather, it is well worth a visit.

We docked at Marina Palon. It is a small fishing port with good shelter two miles east of Mandraki.

Port of Palon: 36° 37.15′ N, 27° 10.25′ E

Approach

Port of Palon is a small fishing port with good shelter located two miles east of Mandraki port. North of the marina, there is a reef running about 100m. Care is needed at the entrance with depths around 2.2-2.5m; keep near the breakwater. Shelter is good.

Mooring

  • Drop anchor and dock to the North or South quay.
  • 30 berths available.
  • Max draft: 2-2.5m
  • Max length: 12m
  • Be careful of shallow areas.
  • No mooring lines available.
  • Bottom: Mud, sand, and rocks – reasonable holding.

Facilities

  • Water and electricity at most berths.
  • Fuel available by mini-tanker.
  • Good restaurant: Ellinis
  • Showers at the end of the pier near the car rental.
  • Small shops and some restaurants around the marina.

Mandraki Port

Mandraki Port is open to the northeast. It’s small, and space is limited, but in calm weather, it is well worth a visit. Submarine cables extend east of the port. Anchorage and fishing from both sides are prohibited. Care is needed with the ferry coming in and out (there is a daily ferry to Kos).
