Kastos Island — A Quiet Sailing Escape in the Ionian
One of the smallest inhabited islands in the Ionian — fewer than 50 permanent residents, no cars, a working windmill above a tiny harbour, and the kind of stillness that makes the rest of the route feel loud by comparison.
Kastos is one of the smallest inhabited islands in the Ionian — a long, narrow strip of land east of Meganisi and just north of Kalamos. The whole island has fewer than 50 permanent residents, no cars, and one small village around the only harbour. As you approach, the island reveals itself gradually — low hills, scattered houses, and a traditional windmill standing above the bay marking your arrival.
For sailors, Kastos is a simplicity stop. The harbour is small (8–10 yachts), the village pace is slow, the few tavernas are honest, and the whole place feels untouched by the busier charter circuit. Calm Ionian summer conditions are normal here — get the wind right and you’ll have one of the quieter overnights of the trip.
⚠ Reality check: Bottom is sand mixed with seagrass — visually identify a sand patch before dropping. Less comfortable in strong S, SE, or E winds. The harbour fills early in season — aim for arrival before midday. A section near the lighthouse is typically kept clear 11:00–13:00.

Approach & First Impression
Approaching Kastos is straightforward in settled weather. The harbour lies on the western side of the island and is clearly visible as you close. The entrance is open and easy to navigate, with good manoeuvring space.
Visibility is typically excellent here — clear water lets you visually assess the seabed while entering, a useful advantage when choosing your anchoring spot.
Weather and protection: Generally calm in typical Ionian summer weather. Less comfortable in stronger winds from the south, southeast, or east — the harbour opens west, so easterly conditions push swell across the entrance into the bay.
⚓ Where to Moor
Harbour · Med Mooring · 8–10 Yachts
Med Mooring in the Small Harbour
The small harbour offers limited space — approximately 8–10 yachts. Med mooring is the standard method, with the deepest water along the northern side of the quay.
Aim for arrival before midday — space becomes limited quickly during the high season. A section near the lighthouse is typically kept clear between 11:00 and 13:00.
⚠ Watch: Lighthouse-area clearance is enforced; don’t take that slot.
Outside Harbour · Free Anchor
Anchoring Outside the Harbour
If the harbour is full, ample space to anchor just outside. Depths 10–20 m on a seabed of sand mixed with seagrass.
Holding: Moderate — seagrass reduces anchor grip. Visually select your drop point and ensure proper anchor setting.
Long Line Ashore · Calmer Days
Long Lines Inside or Outside
In calmer conditions, long lines available — inside the harbour (mainly western side, where rings are available) or along the outer areas near the breakwater and shoreline.
Facilities & Services
Provisioning: Small mini-market for basic supplies — bread, fruit, water, snacks. For real provisioning, top up at Lefkas or Nidri before arrival.
Tavernas: Several local tavernas and a bar — small but solid.
Showers: Available at Bellos restaurant (usually for a fee).
No organised garbage disposal — pack out anything substantial.
