Kastos Island – A Quiet Sailing Escape in the Ionian

Kastos is one of the smallest inhabited islands in the Ionian Sea, offering a rare combination of simplicity, authenticity, and calm sailing conditions. With fewer than 50 permanent residents, no cars, and a naturally protected harbor, it is a destination that feels untouched by mass tourism.

As you approach, the island reveals itself gradually — low hills, scattered houses, and a small harbor centered around a peaceful village. One of the first landmarks you may notice is the traditional windmill, standing above the bay and marking your arrival.

Approach & First Impression

Approaching Kastos is straightforward in settled weather. The harbor lies on the western side of the island and is clearly visible as you get closer. The entrance is open and easy to navigate, with good maneuvering space.

Visibility is typically excellent, and the clear water allows you to visually assess the seabed while entering — a useful advantage when choosing your anchoring spot.

Where to Moor

Harbor Mooring (Med Mooring)

The small harbor offers limited space for approximately 8–10 yachts. Med mooring is the standard method, with the deepest water found along the northern side of the quay.

It is recommended to aim for arrival before midday, as space becomes limited quickly during the high season. A section near the lighthouse is typically kept clear between 11:00 and 13:00.

Anchoring Outside the Harbor

If the harbor is full, there is ample space to anchor just outside. Depths range between 10–20 meters, with a seabed composed of sand mixed with seagrass.

Holding is generally moderate due to the presence of weed, so careful anchor setting is advised.

Long Lines Option

In calmer conditions, you can use long lines either inside the harbor (mainly on the western side where rings are available) or along the outer areas near the breakwater and shoreline.

Holding & Seabed

The seabed around Kastos consists mainly of sand patches interspersed with seagrass. While sand provides good holding, the seagrass can reduce anchor grip, so it’s important to visually select your drop point and ensure proper anchor setting.

Weather & Protection

Kastos offers generally calm conditions in typical Ionian summer weather. However, the anchorage is less comfortable in stronger winds from the south, southeast, or east.

In stable conditions, the harbor and surrounding anchorage provide a peaceful overnight stop with minimal swell.

SeaTV Insight

Kastos is not about facilities or nightlife — it’s about atmosphere. A place where sailing slows down, where evenings are quiet, and where the experience is shaped by simplicity rather than infrastructure.

For sailors navigating the Ionian, it offers a perfect contrast to busier ports — a calm, visual anchorage where you can truly disconnect.

Sailors tips

Note this Harbour in Kastos Island:

Another sheltered harbour called Sarakiniko; is on the opposite side of the village, and one doesn’t have to sail around the island; when leaving to go elsewhere, one has very quick access to the other islands without having to go around the rest of the island if one is just there for a night and having to try to leave early to get to the next island before others do.
