Best Anchorages of Lefkada — Sailing Overview
From the canal at the north to the windsurfer bay at the south — every meaningful anchorage on Lefkada and the small islands in its arc, with practical notes for each.
Lefkada (Lefkas) is the central island of the Ionian — connected to the Greek mainland by a narrow canal at its northern tip, sheltered on its east coast by an arc of small islands, and exposed on its dramatic western cliff coast. The island is one of the densest charter areas in Greece, with two major bases (Lefkas Marina and Vasiliki), several mid-route stops, and quick access to Meganisi, Kastos, and the inner Ionian.
For sailors, Lefkada is best understood as a north-south corridor. Lefkas town and marina at the top; Nidri and Vlicho mid-island for sheltered anchoring; Sivota on the SE corner; Vasiliki on the south coast with its windsurfer thermal; and the wild west coast (Porto Katsiki, Egremni) only accessible by sea in calm conditions. This page covers every meaningful stop with brief notes — for full pilot detail on each, follow the dedicated SeaTV pages linked throughout.
⚠ Reality check: Strong NW winds dominate the area in summer afternoons. The east coast is sheltered; the west coast is exposed and unsuitable for overnight stays. Plan west-coast detours as morning calm-day trips, with east-coast destinations for the afternoon and overnight.

Wind & Weather Patterns
East coast — sheltered cruising
The east coast of Lefkada is some of the calmest cruising water in Greece — sheltered by the geography of the inner Ionian and the small island arc off Nidri. Standard charter water for any crew.
West coast — exposed
The dramatic west coast (Porto Katsiki, Egremni, Kathisma) faces the open Ionian Sea. F4–F5 swell rolls onto the beaches every afternoon. Spectacular for daytime visits in calm weather; never an overnight option.
South coast — Vasiliki thermal
The south coast bay at Vasiliki generates one of the most reliable afternoon thermals in the Mediterranean — F4–F5 funnelled into the bay daily. Famous for windsurfing, demanding for anchoring.

Lefkas Marina (D-Marin)
The largest charter base in the Ionian — at the northern end of the island, accessed through the Lefkas canal and across the floating bridge. Strong NW winds dominate the area; be prepared on approach.
Berthing: Modern marina with laid lines, 620+ berths, full services. VHF Ch. 69.

⚠ Watch: Floating bridge opens hourly only — time your transit carefully.

Nidri Town & Tranquil Bay
Nidri is the busy charter town on the east coast, sheltered behind the Cheloni–Sparti–Madouri island arc. Tranquil Bay sits opposite the town — a peaceful anchorage on the inside of the islands with mud and weed bottom. Anchor and enjoy the surroundings.
Best for: Town quay for restaurants and shops; Tranquil Bay for quiet swim and sunset.

East Coast · 38°41.11’N · 20°42.15’E · 1 NM S of Nidri
Vlicho Bay
A landlocked bay south of Nidri — entered through a narrow channel, opening into a wide protected basin. The most sheltered overnight on this stretch of coast, regularly used as a storm refuge by the local charter fleet. Mud and weed bottom; multiple anchorage spots within the basin.
Best for: Storm refuge, repairs (boatyard at the head), quiet overnight.
Full guide: Treated as the third anchorage on the Nidri page.
SE Corner · 38°37.24’N · 20°41.00’E
Sivota
A sheltered bay on the SE corner of Lefkada — small village, tight quay layout, multiple charter pontoons. Stern-to the NE pontoon if there’s room, or anchor in the bay. Good shelter overall, with strong gusts on the prevailing NW wind that test the anchor.
Best for: An overnight on the way south to Vasiliki or east to Kastos.
⚠ Watch: Strong gusts test the anchor. Set carefully and confirm the bite.
South Coast · 38°37.36’N · 20°36.26’E
Vasiliki
A growing charter base on the south coast — new marina under construction, good shelter in the inner harbour. The bay has a famous afternoon thermal that funnels into the harbour, attracting windsurfers from across Europe. Berthing capacity tight in season; popular for winter storage.
Best for: A south-coast charter base, windsurfing day, sheltered overnight in summer.

Porto Katsiki — The Lunch Stop
The most spectacular beach on Lefkada — and arguably one of the most spectacular in Greece. Vertical white cliffs descending into turquoise water, a narrow strip of white pebbles at the bottom. A calm-day lunch stop — never an overnight.
Anchoring: Drop in 8–12 m on sand off the beach. Holding generally good in calm conditions.
⚠ Watch: No shelter from any westerly. The afternoon thermal makes the beach uncomfortable from 12:00 onwards. Plan to arrive at 10:00 and leave by 13:00 at the latest.
⛵ Adjacent Islands & Mainland
From Lefkada, three nearby destinations sit within easy reach of any anchorage on the east coast:
→ Meganisi Island — small island with multiple sheltered bays, 5 NM from Nidri
→ Kastos Island — quietest overnight in the area, 12 NM SE
→ Preveza — mainland gateway via the Lefkas canal, 5 NM N
Pro Tips for Lefkada
Sail mornings, swim afternoons. The standard rhythm of the Ionian — and especially relevant on Lefkada with its strong afternoon thermal. By 14:00 you should be at anchor, not still beating up the channel.
West coast = morning calm-day only. Don’t try to overnight at Porto Katsiki, Egremni, or Kathisma. Calm-day lunch stops only — and have an east-coast destination identified for the afternoon.
Time the bridge. Lefkas canal bridge opens hourly. Be lined up 15 minutes before the opening — late arrivals wait an hour.
Use Vlicho as storm refuge. If a strong forecast develops, Vlicho’s narrow entrance and protected basin are the best shelter on this stretch. Better than running back to the marina in deteriorating conditions.
Provision in Lefkas Town. The biggest supermarkets and chandlery on the island are at the north — provision before pushing south, services thin out as you go.
