Sailing Guide to Iraklia: A Hidden Gem South of Naxos

Iraklia lies south of Naxos. A deep inlet on the NE tip of the island offers a picturesque and serene setting for sailors.

Harbour and Mooring Details

This island has a nice little harbour. Moor only on the inside pier. Be aware when the big ferries and water ship come in.

• Iraklia Key (36° 51′ 48″ N, 25° 28′ 14″ E) – The entrance is difficult to see from the north. On the short mole, there is room for a few yachts. You can anchor in 3-6m. Care is needed due to old mooring chains and big flat stones on the bottom. The bottom is sand with some rocks, providing good holding.

Top Anchorages in Iraklia

• Livadi Bay (36° 51′ 14″ N, 25° 28′ 29″ E) – A large cove with depths of 5-10m. The bottom is sand and algae, offering good holding. There is plenty of room for yachts. The bay provides protection from the west, south, and east, but not in a Meltemi. Care is needed due to underwater pipes.
• Alimias Beach (36° 49′ 40″ N, 25° 25′ 22″ E) – A nice narrow bay. There is a plane wreck at the NE in 8m, marked by a small buoy. Snorkeling around the wreck is recommended.

Iraklia’s hidden coves and charming harbour make it an ideal stop for sailors exploring the Cyclades. With good anchorage spots and serene landscapes, it’s a destination not to be missed.
