Puerto Deportivo de Mazagón — The Atlantic Gateway to Doñana & the Pre-Algarve Coast
~37°08’N · 6°50’W · Mazagón · municipality of Palos de la Frontera + Moguer · Huelva province · Costa de la Luz (Atlantic) · the most northwesterly cruising port in Andalusia · ~25 km SE of Huelva city · the natural shelter just outside the Tinto-Odiel river estuary · adjacent to Doñana National Park — UNESCO World Heritage 1994 · the largest wetland reserve in Western Europe · ~120 km E of the Portuguese border + the Algarve · the historic launch point of Columbus’s 1492 voyage from nearby Palos de la Frontera.
VHF Ch 9 · Agencia Pública de Puertos de Andalucía · Atlantic tides 2-3 m · sailor’s first or last Spanish port between the Portuguese Algarve + Cádiz
Puerto Deportivo de Mazagón is the most northwesterly marina on the Spanish Atlantic coast and the practical gateway between the Algarve and Cádiz. The marina sits at the southern edge of the Tinto-Odiel estuary — the river system that carried Columbus out to sea in August 1492 from Palos de la Frontera, 7 km inland from Mazagón. The setting is unlike anywhere else in Andalusia: immediately E of the marina spreads Doñana National Park (UNESCO World Heritage 1994), one of Europe’s largest wetlands and a critical stopover for migrating birds between Africa and N Europe — flamingos, Iberian lynx, ~5 million wintering waterfowl annually. For cruisers Mazagón is a tactical port: ~120 km E of the Portuguese border (Vila Real de Santo António), it’s the first Spanish marina you reach E-bound from the Algarve and the natural staging point before the longer 70 NM run S to Cádiz. ⚠ Key understanding: this is Atlantic coast — expect 2-3 m tidal range, ocean swell, and the prevailing W/SW Atlantic winds (very different from Mediterranean cruising). The marina is sheltered, but the approach across the bar of the Tinto-Odiel estuary requires attention to tide tables and modest swell direction.
⚠ Reality check before you arrive:
→ ⚠ This is the Atlantic, not the Med · 2-3 m tidal range · ocean swell · prevailing W/SW winds
→ ⚠ Bar at Tinto-Odiel estuary · check tide + swell · approach near High Water · avoid heavy SW swell
→ ⚠ Doñana National Park anchoring · NOT permitted within the park boundary · respect the protected area
→ ⚠ Nearest provisioning · Mazagón village adjacent · Huelva city ~25 km · supermarkets + chandlery
→ Schengen + EU customs union · regular VAT 21% · standard EU/Schengen rules
