Sailing to Koufonisia: A Sheltered Haven in the Cyclades

We only came to this island because of the weather. We sailors know that our course depends on the wind, its strength, and its direction. With 30 knots forecast, we needed to find a safe and sheltered spot. So we sailed to south Koufonisia/Koufonosi Island, where there is a small port (36° 55′ 48″ N, 25° 36′ 0″ E). Watch the visual pilot of the marina.

Sailing Conditions

Sailing was upwind, with the first reef in the main and the jib wound tight. The white ripple from the waves made it pure pleasure. The entrance to the marina is narrow, and we were asked to anchor along the western platform. Docking was difficult because the bow thruster did not work.

Discovering Koufonisia

The good news was that the island turned out to be an awesome surprise: the village was really magical, with great traditional restaurants and shops.

Recommended Anchorages Around Koufonisia

  • Koufonisia Bay (36° 55.47″ N, 25° 36.14″ E) – To the east of the marina, this is a nice sheltered bay.
  • Paralia Pori (36° 56.43″ N, 25° 37.24″ E) – On the east side of the island, there is a beautiful bay with crystal clear water and good holding. Only suitable in calm weather.

Exploring the Shoreline

You can walk along the shoreline and find great beaches. We stopped for delicious fava and fresh fish in a charming place with a sea view!
