Sailing in the Cyclades: Safe Havens During the Meltemi

When sailing in the Cyclades, especially in the hot summer months of July and August, the Meltemi is not a surprise. It is essential to know in which marinas you can tie up safely.

Finding Refuge on Koufonisi Island

We found refuge on a small island: Koufonisi Island, located 2 miles NW of the island Keros. The small port on the east side of the island is a decent shelter from the Meltemi. The entrance to the marina is narrow, and we were asked to anchor along the western platform. Manoeuvring was tricky: the marina was small, and the wind made it difficult.

Marina Details and Recommendations

It is advisable to reserve a place in advance; the marina can accommodate up to 22 yachts. There are mooring lines. The depths at the head of the central mole are 3.8 up to 4 meters. On the southwest of the island, a lovely cove is recommended in calm weather.

Facilities on Koufonisi Island

The marina provides water and electricity supplies. The village offers basic amenities, and it is magical, with excellent traditional restaurants and shops. You can walk around the shore and find a magnificent restaurant and outstanding beaches.
