Sailing the Cyclades Islands: A Dramatic Aegean Adventure

The Cyclades is a dramatically amazing circle of islands, each with its own personal drama, from the civilization-ending volcano of Santorini to the illuminating remains on Delos. The beautiful Cyclades are located in the southern part of the Aegean Sea. The islands form a ring around the ancient island of Delos, with its ancient ruins and temples, next to the well-travelled island of Mykonos.

Wind Conditions in the Cyclades

No mainland protects these islands. They are more exposed to the northerly ‘Meltemi’ wind, which very much dominates the Cyclades islands. The ‘Meltemi’ arrives during July and continues into September. It can blow for a day, or it can last several days. It can also funnel between the islands, and the downdraft on the lee side of an island can also increase its strength. These wind conditions mean sailing the Cyclades islands provides for more exciting sailing, but might also prove ‘too exciting’ for any less enthusiastic members of your group.

Exploring the Islands

The islands of the Cyclades include Syros, Naxos, Sifnos, Serifos, Paros, Ios, Santorini with its volcano and amazing sunsets, and of course, the small islands south of Naxos: Schinousa, Donousa, Irakleia, and Koufonisia, a marvellous archipelago. Most of the Cycladic islands are between 15 and 25 miles apart, making the Cyclades an ideal sailing destination, offering over 20 islands all within easy reach with many bays to anchor.

Why Sail the Cyclades?

Sailing the Cyclades offers a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Whether you’re exploring ancient ruins on Delos or enjoying the vibrant nightlife of Mykonos, there is something for everyone. The exciting Meltemi winds provide a thrilling experience for seasoned sailors, while the proximity of the islands makes it convenient for shorter trips between destinations.
