Velas Marina, São Jorge — The Quiet Heart of the Azores Triangle

A small marina at the centre of the Azorean “triangle” · 76 berths, of which only about 10 for visiting yachts · 22 NM from Horta · 30 NM from Lajes do Pico · 11 NM to São Roque · operated by Portos dos Açores under harbour master José, often called the friendliest in the Azores. The base for hikers, surfers, cheese pilgrims, and anyone wanting a quieter alternative to Horta. Approximate coordinates: 38°40’N · 28°12’W. VHF Ch. 9 · Ch. 16 distress.

São Jorge is the long, thin, boat-shaped island in the centre of the Azores — 53 km long, 7 km wide, 1,053 m at its highest point (Pico da Esperança), and shaped by the same volcanic forces that built the rest of the archipelago. It sits at the centre of the Azorean “triangle” — Faial, Pico, São Jorge — close enough to all three that you can do a different island every day. The marina at Velas is small, the visiting berths fill up fast in summer, and the harbour master watches every incoming yacht on AIS to figure out where to put you before you even tie up. Quieter than Horta, more authentic than Ponta Delgada, this is the marina that crews mention when they want to remember why they came to the Azores in the first place. Famous for cheese, hiking, surfing, fajãs, and birdsong at night from the cliff colonies.

⚠ Reality check before you arrive:

⚠ Only ~10 visiting berths out of 76 · phone or VHF ahead in summer · José monitors AIS and assigns berths before you arrive

⚠ Marina hidden from south until you pass the main breakwater — the narrow entrance is straight ahead once you clear it

⚠ Small orange buoy marks the end of submerged rocks extending from the old pier (now the W mole) · stay right of it

⚠ Sensitive to fresh SE winds · occasional swell rolls in · a 34-foot Hanse has been known to roll hard at the floating dock

⚠ Pontoon A box berths have short fingers · manoeuvring inside is tight · ask for pontoon E (alongside floating dock) if you can

⚠ Earthquake awareness: in March-April 2022 the island had a seismic crisis (~20,000 tremors over two weeks, mostly in Velas area) · activity has settled but check current bulletins before you arrive

Showers €1.50 each (honour system) · washing machine + dryer €5 each · note the count yourself, settle on departure

Approach & Entry

The harbour at Velas is tucked between the long ferry pier and the cliff coast on the southwestern corner of São Jorge. The marina itself stays hidden behind the main breakwater until you’ve cleared it — once past, the narrow entrance is straight ahead.

Approach sequence

→ Approach from south · the marina is invisible until you pass the main breakwater.

⚠ Pass the ferry/cargo terminal first · two entrances open up beyond it.

⚠ Watch for the small orange buoy marking the end of submerged rocks extending from the old pier (which is now the W mole of the marina).

Stay on the right side of the entrance for the deeper water — at least 4 m at pontoon A.

→ Call José on VHF Ch. 9 once inside · he’ll have already plotted you on AIS and decided where you go.

Where you’ll berth

Pontoon A: box berths with fingers · ⚠ fingers are short on the inside · manoeuvring is tight · the inside places are the trickiest.

Pontoon E: alongside a floating dock · in high season expect to raft up.

Hammerheads of other pontoons: sometimes available for larger boats.

→ Power and water at all berths · clean sanitary block · two washing machines + a dryer (€5 each).

Wind & swell

→ Bay protected on the W by the town and on the N + E by 200 m cliffs.

⚠ Marina is sensitive to fresh SE winds — the only quadrant not blocked by terrain.

⚠ Occasional swell rolls in · smaller boats on pontoon E will roll noticeably · check forecasts before committing.

São Jorge Beyond the Marina

São Jorge is shaped like a long boat. 53 km along its NE-SW axis, just 7 km across at its widest, with a central spine of volcanic peaks running the full length. The coastline drops in cliffs on both sides — and at the bottom of those cliffs, you find the fajãs: small coastal plains formed by lava flows or landslides, each one its own micro-environment, some with lagoons, some with abandoned villages, some with coffee plantations (the only place in Europe where coffee grows commercially). The island is internationally known among hikers and surfers, and quietly famous for its cheese.

The fajãs

Fajã das Caldeiras de Cima: hot springs accessed by hike — natural pools with thermal water on the north coast.

Fajã dos Cubres: with its lagoon · birdwatching, swimming, very photogenic.

Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo: classic surf spot · only reached by hiking trail · clams (amêijoas) farmed in the lagoon, served at the local restaurant.

Fajã do Ouvidor: closest to Velas · natural pool (“Poça Simão Dias”) between black volcanic rocks.

Pico da Esperança

The highest point on the island at 1,053 m · accessed by drive + walk · panoramic views of Pico, Faial, Graciosa, and Terceira on a clear day · part of the central spine of volcanic peaks running the length of São Jorge.

Queijo São Jorge

The cheese that put São Jorge on the Portuguese culinary map · hard cow’s milk cheese aged 3-12 months · DOP-protected · sold at the cooperatives in Beira and Velas · take a wheel back to the boat.

Cory’s Shearwater

The cliff colonies on the N + E sides of the marina are home to Cory’s Shearwater — a seabird that nests in burrows on the cliffs and returns to the nest only at night, calling to each other in flight. The night calls sound oddly like children crying or laughing in the distance · the first time you hear them you’ll wonder if a child has gone overboard somewhere · they’re harmless and the locals love them. Best heard in summer (May-October).

⛵ Inter-Island Sailing — Triangle Distances
