Gibraltar: A Sailor’s Essential Guide

Introduction

Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, is a crucial gateway between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. For sailors, Gibraltar offers several key advantages and serves as a strategic stop for refuelling, restocking, and enjoying a unique blend of British and Mediterranean cultures.

Gibraltar is the central station for anyone crossing the Atlantic to or from the Mediterranean.

Customs and Immigration

Gibraltar is outside the EU Customs Territory, making it an ideal location for vessels to reset their VAT status without leaving the Mediterranean. Entry procedures are streamlined for foreign yachts, but all visiting vessels must berth at one of the designated marinas.

Sailing Conditions

The Strait of Gibraltar can present challenging sailing conditions due to strong currents and winds. Sailors should be prepared for potentially rough seas, especially when transitioning between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.

Approach and Navigation

  • Gibraltar Rock rises to 406m
  • From the south & east: Europa lighthouse
  • From the west: Punta Carnero lighthouse at the southwest entrance to the bay
  • Speed limit: 5 knots
  • Note: The airport is the border between Gibraltar and Spain

Services and Supplies

Gibraltar offers VAT-free marine supplies, making it an attractive stop for provisioning. There are two well-stocked chandleries: Sheppard’s of Gibraltar and Gib Yachts.

Attractions

While in Gibraltar, sailors can explore attractions like the famous Rock of Gibraltar, St. Michael’s Cave, and the Gibraltar Nature Reserve. The territory also offers duty-free shopping and a variety of restaurants and bars.

Weather

Gibraltar enjoys a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm summers, making it a year-round sailing destination. However, be aware of the occasional strong easterly wind known as the Levante.
