Introduction to Minorca

Minorca, the eastern gem of the Balearic Islands, is a sailor’s paradise. With its rich ecological interior, cultural heritage, and frequent north winds, it offers a unique Mediterranean cruising experience.

Sailing Season and Weather

The ideal cruising season runs from late May to late September, with peak crowding from mid-July to late August. Be prepared for occasional unsettled weather and lively winds, especially the NW Tramontana and NE Mistral.

Important Notice

Do not anchor on the Posidonia! Protect the local marine ecosystem by avoiding seagrass beds.

Best Anchorages in Minorca

Southwest Coast

Ciutadella – Cala Des Degollador

Coordinates: 39°59’38.0″N 3°49’39.9″E

A charming harbor town with beautiful beaches. Anchor in 5-7m on sand in calm weather. Note: Can be choppy due to nearby ferry traffic.

Son Saura

Coordinates: 39°55’33.0″N 3°53’37.8″E

Large bay with good shelter from N-NE winds. Anchor on sand in 5m depth. Be aware of the rock and weed strip crossing the bay’s middle.

South Coast

Son Bou

Coordinates: 39°53’42.6″N 4°04’27.5″E

Long coastline with resorts offering various amenities. Anchor in 5-8m on sandy bottom in calm weather.

Don’t miss the remains of an ancient Christian basilica nearby.

Cala Porter

Coordinates: 39° 52.07′ N, 4° 7.90′ E

Deep bay with 40m-high cliffs. Anchor in 3-7m depth on sandy bottom. Visit the famous Cova d’en Xoroi in the cliffs.

East Coast

Cala Teulera

Coordinates: 39°52’40.8″N 4°18’30.0″E

Well-sheltered anchorage with muddy bottom at the entrance to Mahon. Exercise caution in strong winds due to potential anchor dragging.

North Coast

Caution: The north coast is dominated by the strong Mistral wind. Be aware of shallow areas near capes.

Cala Addaya

Coordinates: 40°00’13.8″N 4°12’01.2″E

Protected marina with nearby anchorage. Part of the S’Albufera des Grau National Park. Observe anchor restrictions in weed-covered areas.

Arenal D’En Castell

Coordinates: 40° 1.42′ N, 4° 11.00′ E

Sheltered bay except during north winds. Anchor in about 5m depth on sand and weed. Amenities available near the beach.

Fornells

Coordinates: 40°2.489’N 4°7.672’E

Large bay with extended buoy fields, offering shelter during the Mistral.

Northwest Coast

Cala d’Algaiarens

Coordinates: 40°02’55.9″N 3°55’15.3″E

Popular spot with two beaches. Anchor in 4-8m depth on sandy bottom. No bars or restaurants available.

Cala Morell

Coordinates: 40°03’19.7″N 3°53’00.1″E

Close to Ciutadella. Anchor in front of the buoy field for smaller boats. Visit nearby caves and enjoy local restaurants.
