Zea Marina, Piraeus — Ancient Harbour, Modern Superyacht Hub

670 berths in the heart of Piraeus, max LOA 150 m, fortification walls dating to 500 BC visible inside the marina basin. Athens’s superyacht harbour and the closest charter base to the city centre.

Zea Marina sits in the heart of Piraeus — the natural harbour basin built by the Athenians around 500 BC as one of three ancient military ports of the city-state. Modern Zea retains the basin shape of the ancient harbour, with fragments of the Themistoclean fortification walls still visible along its perimeter. For sailors, this is Athens’s superyacht-friendly marina — capable of handling vessels up to 150 m LOA and 8 m draft.

For sailors, the practical appeal of Zea is its urban location — Piraeus city centre is 1 km away, Athens centre 14 km, and the airport 47 km. This is the natural choice for crews who want to combine a Greek charter with serious city time, or for skippers running larger vessels that don’t fit at Alimos.

⚠ Reality check:

Coast crowded with shipping — Piraeus is one of the busiest ports in Europe

Traffic separation zones for ships in/out — give way and stay clear

Strong Meltemi makes approach challenging — busy with commercial traffic plus wind chop

Limited high-season space — book in advance

Approach & Navigation

Piraeus shipping density

Piraeus is one of the busiest ports in Europe — commercial cargo, ferries to every major Greek island, cruise liners, fishing boats, and a constant pulse of small-craft traffic. The approach to Zea Marina threads between this commercial activity. Nighttime navigation requires extra care — ferry profiles can blend with shore lights, and big-ship lights look different from yacht lights.

Traffic separation zones

There are defined traffic separation zones for commercial ships moving in and out of Piraeus. Plot these on the chartplotter; cross at right angles where required; give way to commercial traffic.

Meltemi exposure

Strong Meltemi makes the approach more challenging — the entrance is partially exposed, ferries don’t stop or slow for sailing yachts, and wind chop can build in the channel. Time arrival between ferry departures if possible.

⚓ Mooring at Zea

Booked Berth · Marina-Assigned · VHF Ch. 09

Excellent Shelter, Marina Crew Guidance

Method: On arrival the marina crew assigns and guides you to your berth. Standard Med-mooring stern-to with laid lines.

Shelter: Excellent — the basin is fully enclosed by the ancient harbour walls plus modern breakwater extension. All-around protection.

Booking: Limited high-season space — book in advance.

VHF: Channel 09 (not 71 like Alimos) — call before arrival.

The Ancient Harbour at Zea

Zea is one of the three ancient military harbours of Piraeus, built in the early 5th century BC under the statesman Themistocles. It was the largest of the three (the others were Mounikhia/Mikrolimani and Kantharos), and its primary function was housing Athens’s trireme fleet — the war-galleys that powered Athenian naval supremacy across the Aegean.

Visible today: Fragments of the Themistoclean fortification walls run along the modern marina perimeter. The basin shape itself is the original ancient harbour outline. Ship-shed foundations have been excavated along the south-west side — visible from the water.

Worth visiting: The Hellenic Maritime Museum sits at the head of the marina basin — small but well-curated, with exhibits on Athenian naval history including Zea’s specific role. A 30-minute visit, easy walk from any berth.

Facilities & Services

Water & electricity: 24/7 supply at every berth.

Fuel: Available within the marina — call ahead to coordinate.

Pump-out: Sewage pump-out stations available — useful before departing for longer cruising legs.

Sanitation: WC and showers throughout the marina.

Wi-Fi: Wireless internet access throughout.

Parking: Outdoor car parking inside the marina perimeter.

Chandlery: On-site chandlery shop for last-minute spares and supplies.

ATM & Port Police: Both inside the marina perimeter.

Diving services: Available — useful for hull inspection or anchor recovery before extended trips.

Cleaning: General cleaning works available for the boat.

Maintenance & repairs: Most repairs can be arranged within the marina; for specialist work, the wider Piraeus marine industry is at hand.

Around the Marina — Shopping, Dining, Hospital

Hospital of Piraeus: Located close to the marina — a notable advantage over more isolated charter bases. Worth knowing for crew with medical concerns.

Restaurants & cafés: Numerous restaurants line the waterfront promenade and the streets running back into Piraeus. Mix of waterfront tavernas, café-bars, and upmarket dining. Walk the front and pick what looks good — the standard is Athens-restaurant level.

Shopping: Piraeus has full city-grade shopping — supermarkets, pharmacies, banks, banks, electronics, clothing. Walk 5–10 minutes from any berth into the city.

Athens easy access: Metro Line 1 from Piraeus station runs direct to central Athens (Monastiraki, Omonia, Syntagma). 25-minute trip. Useful for evening sightseeing or crew rotations.

⚖ When to Choose Zea over Alimos

Zea and Alimos are the two largest Athens-area marinas, but they serve different sailors:

Pick Zea when you want: Larger vessel handling (up to 150 m LOA, 8 m draft) · superyacht-grade facilities · urban Piraeus location · easy metro to Athens centre · the historic setting · Piraeus hospital nearby.

Pick Alimos when you want: Charter-fleet base (most companies operate from there) · busier sailing community · cheaper rates typically · easier access to airport · less commercial traffic in approach.

Pro Tips for Zea Marina

VHF Ch. 09 — not 71. Different from Alimos. Don’t confuse the two; the marina won’t hear you on the wrong channel.

Time your approach between ferries. Piraeus has constant ferry traffic; the entrance can feel like a queue at peak departure times. Check the ferry schedule and time your arrival in a calmer window.

Walk the ancient walls. The Themistoclean fortification fragments along the marina perimeter are the actual stones laid in the early 5th century BC. A quiet 20-minute walk around the basin pays off.

Use the metro for Athens. Don’t bother with a taxi to central Athens — Piraeus metro station is 5 minutes’ walk and runs directly to Monastiraki, Omonia, Syntagma. €1.20, 25 minutes.

Book the pump-out before departure. The sewage pump-out stations are convenient and worth using before pushing out for a week or more — many anchorages don’t have pump-out and the Saronic discharges close to the boat aren’t ideal.

Hospital of Piraeus is close. Useful information to file away — proximity to a major hospital is unusual at marinas, and worth noting for crew with medical concerns.

Suggested Routes from Zea
