Sestri Levante — The Two Bays Town & Cinque Terre Gateway

A picturesque town built on a narrow isthmus connecting the mainland to a rocky cliff, with two distinct bays — Baia delle Favole (Bay of Fairy Tales, named after Hans Christian Andersen who stayed here in 1833) and Baia del Silenzio (Bay of Silence). The natural starting point for the SeaTV Cinque Terre charter route, with 125 berths under the cliff and quick access east to the protected coastal villages.

Sestri Levante sits about halfway between Genoa and La Spezia on the Ligurian Riviera — a town with an unusual geography that has made it both a sailor’s stop and a literary attraction since the 19th century. The historic centre is built on a narrow isthmus connecting the mainland to a rocky cliff (the “Isola”), creating two distinct bays back-to-back. Baia delle Favole (“Bay of Fairy Tales”) faces NW toward Genoa — and is the harbour for visiting yachts. Baia del Silenzio (“Bay of Silence”) faces SE in a perfectly framed crescent — the postcard image of Sestri Levante.

⚠ Reality check:

Bay open to the north · choose elsewhere if N winds forecast

Reservation recommended · 125 berths fill in summer

Tourist crowding in season · the town is a popular Riviera stop

Libeccio (SW gale) · gets uncomfortable in stronger Ligurian conditions

Approach & Navigation

From Lavagna: Approximately 2.5 NM east along the coast — a short hop, often used as a transit between the two ports.

Visual landmark: The harbour lies under a cliff connected by a narrow isthmus to the town. The cliff (locally called “the Isola”) is the unmistakable approach reference — a rocky promontory projecting from the mainland with the church of San Nicolò on top.

From La Spezia: ~22 NM NW along the Cinque Terre coast · the natural east-to-west direction for the classic charter route.

⚓ Mooring at Sestri Levante

125 Berths · 2–15 m Depths · Stern-To

Standard Marina Procedure

Berths: 125 across the marina basin.

Depths: 2–15 m · range covers shoal-keel charter boats through to deeper-draft yachts.

Mooring procedure: Go stern where directed by marina staff, or wherever there is space if no direction given.

Shelter: Generally good · the cliff and breakwater protect the basin from most directions. Open to the north — a N wind blows directly into the bay.

Facilities & Services

Fuel and water: Available on the fuel quay.

Town access: The harbour sits right next to the historic centre — cross from the marina onto the isthmus and you’re in the old town within minutes. The setting is unusual: a town wrapped around the narrow neck of land between two bays.

Provisioning: Local shops, bakeries, restaurants in the historic centre · supermarket nearby.

Train station: Sestri Levante station is on the main Genoa–La Spezia line — useful for crew arrivals and for day-trips to Genoa or the Cinque Terre by rail (the practical alternative to sailing into the small Cinque Terre village harbours).

The Two Bays — Geography & Heritage

Sestri Levante’s defining feature is its two distinct bays, separated by the narrow isthmus on which the historic centre is built. Each has its own character and its own literary heritage.

Baia delle Favole — “Bay of Fairy Tales”

The NW-facing bay — and the one the marina is in. Named after Hans Christian Andersen, the Danish fairy-tale author, who stayed in Sestri Levante in 1833 and wrote enthusiastically about the place. The town has held an annual Andersen Award literary competition for children’s literature since 1967, in his honour. This is your harbour — practical, full of yachts, with the Andersen literary connection on the wall in the old town.

Baia del Silenzio — “Bay of Silence”

The SE-facing bay — a perfectly crescent-shaped beach lined with pastel-coloured fishermen’s houses. The name speaks for itself: this is the quieter side, less commercial than Baia delle Favole, with traditional fishing boats hauled up on the sand and the geometry of the shoreline forming one of the most photographed views on the Ligurian Coast. Walk across the isthmus from your berth — it’s a 5-minute stroll.

The Isola & Church of San Nicolò

The cliff-top promontory between the two bays — historically called “the Isola” (island) although it’s connected to the mainland by the isthmus. The church of San Nicolò dell’Isola at the top dates from the 12th century. The path up gives panoramic views over both bays, the harbour, and the Ligurian Sea — the best vantage point in the town.

Other Literary Visitors

Ernest Hemingway spent time on this coast and referenced Sestri Levante in his writing. Guglielmo Marconi (the Nobel-laureate physicist who pioneered long-distance radio communication) conducted radio experiments from the bay — the Elettra, his floating laboratory yacht, anchored here. The town’s geography and atmosphere has attracted writers, scientists, and artists for nearly two centuries.

Strategic Role — Cinque Terre Route Starting Point

Sestri Levante is the natural starting point for the SeaTV Cinque Terre charter route — far enough north to be outside the Cinque Terre crowds, with full marina services for charter departures, and well positioned for the east-bound run along the protected coast toward La Spezia and the Gulf of Poets.

Typical route from Sestri Levante: Sestri Levante → Cinque Terre coast (Vernazza day-stop) → Portovenere → La Spezia gulf (Le Grazie / Porto Mirabello / Lerici) → return. ~50 NM round trip · classic charter week. See the full SeaTV route.

Wind & Shelter Strategy

Generally good shelter from the prevailing southerly and westerly winds · the cliff to the SE blocks SE swell, the headland to the W blocks W winds, and the breakwater closes off the harbour basin.

⚠ N exposure: The bay is open to the north. A strong N wind (Tramontana) blows directly into the harbour. Choose Lavagna Marina 2.5 NM west, or move into the Gulf of La Spezia, if a Tramontana is forecast.

Libeccio (SW gale): The classic Ligurian bad-weather wind. Sestri Levante’s basin holds reasonably well, but if a heavy libeccio is forecast, Porto Mirabello in the Gulf of La Spezia is more secure.

Pro Tips for Sestri Levante

Walk to Baia del Silenzio. Don’t berth in the marina and skip it. The crescent-shaped Bay of Silence on the SE side is 5 minutes across the isthmus — and is the iconic view that makes Sestri Levante special.

Climb to San Nicolò. 12th-century church on the Isola promontory · panoramic views over both bays and the open sea · the best photo spot in the town.

Use as Cinque Terre charter starting point. Reliable marina, full services, train connections for crew, well-positioned for the east-bound Cinque Terre route. The east-to-west alternative also works if your charter direction is reversed.

Watch the N forecast. The bay is open to the N · Tramontana means surge in the basin. Lavagna 2.5 NM west has different exposure and is the natural alternative.

Train day-trip to the Cinque Terre. If the wind doesn’t suit a sail east, take the train from Sestri Levante station to Vernazza or Manarola for a day in the protected villages. Same logic as from Porto Mirabello — efficient, avoids the small-harbour berth problem.

Reserve in season. 125 berths is moderate for the Riviera · summer fills up. Book ahead, especially in August.

Combine with Lavagna day-stop. Lavagna 2.5 NM west is the largest marina on the Ligurian Riviera (1,500 berths) — useful for fuel, provisioning, or as a Tramontana-shelter alternative. Day-sail between the two as part of your charter.

Cinque Terre route  ·  Lavagna 2.5 NM W  ·  Portofino 10 NM NW

“Sestri Levante is a town with two bays — the working Bay of Fairy Tales where you berth, and the photogenic Bay of Silence five minutes across the isthmus where the fishermen pull their boats up on the sand. Hans Christian Andersen named one of them in 1833. Marconi conducted radio experiments from the harbour. Hemingway visited the coast.
