Lavrion Marina Sailing and Mooring Guide

Overview

Lavrion Marina is a nice port built around a gulf with immediate access to the Aegean Sea. It is situated in Lavrio (Laurium), a small town located 60 km southeast of Athens, 20 minutes south by car from the international airport Venizelos on the lower east side of the Souniou (Attica) region.

Approach

When approaching from the sea from the south, the town’s buildings are easily identified north of Gaidhouromandra (Akra Perdika). Ay Nikolaos’s two tall striped chimneys in the bay north of Lavrion will be seen from the north. At night, the light on Ay Eragastria shines white [FL 1.5S 4M].

Cultural Heritage

The region is rich in cultural heritage from ancient to modern Greece. The ancient Theater of Lavrion is situated very close by, and tours go out daily to the surrounding sites on land or offering diving explorations to the corals and shipwrecks below the sea surface. The port of Lavrion provides a home for several cruise ships and sailboats. It is changing fast, opening tavernas and cafes and becoming an important ferry boat hub for the Cyclades Islands (Kea, Kithos).

Mooring

The north and northwest basins within the port are for charter and local boats. You can go stern or bow to the commercial town quay on the southwest side or outside the L-shaped mole to the west. Most yacht berths have laid moorings. Care is needed to avoid mooring chains when using your anchor (5-15 m depths). Prices are relatively low. Many charter companies and ferries are in the marina, making the waterways crowded with traffic and challenging to find a berth in season during turn-around days (Fri-Sun).

A strong Meltemi blows in from the northeast during summer. The port provides good shelter from the winds; a low swell may sometimes creep in.

Facilities

Water and electricity (220V) are available on the town quay. Water is also found on the mole. It is possible to receive repair services (fibreglass, sail, electric) at tel: +30 229 202 4229, or visit www.marinelavrio.gr. Fuel is supplied by a mini tanker to yachts on the quay, and fueling and extensive repair capabilities are also available at the nearby Olympic Marina to the south. Other services found within and around the marina include dressing rooms and toilets, diving, car rental, crane, bank (ATM), chandlers, and many restaurants and tavernas in town.

Bays

Pounta Zeza (37°40′.738Ν 24°04′.020Ε), a well known beach immediately to the S of Olympic Marina, 0.5 NM past Akra Fonias. The shallow bay offers anchorage in sand with good holding at 5-10 m depths. Stay clear of the swimming area, marked with fixed buoys.

Pasalimani (37°40′.5458Ν 24°03′.145Ε) is the next bay to the S. Anchorage in sand with reasonable holding at the 5 m depth. The bay may be quite open to the swell. Care should be taken when sailing out to the S of this bay as there is an underwater reef with rocks underwater until 400 m from shore.
