Sailing to Methana: A Guide to Mooring and Facilities

Methana is connected to the mainland in the south of the Saronic Gulf by a narrow saddle. The largest city, Methana, lies on the southeastern side of the island and is known for its sulfur springs. The marina was built as part of a natural bay south of the city near the hot springs.

Overview

To the west of Methana, there is a small fishing village at the foot of which is a small anchorage that allows convenient and pleasant docking in calm weather. There is space on the south pier for about 15 yachts, and you can connect to electricity and water for a small fee. There are two friendly taverns (if in a flotilla, you should give advance notice on the phone). Anchorage is a bit crowded but has depth and needs to be entered carefully.

Approach

A small fishing harbour on the west coast. You’ll see the houses as you get close. Care is needed with the stone breakwater.

Mooring

Go stern to the quay on the south side, or you can anchor with a long line to the breakwater. The bottom is sand with some rocks.

Facilities

  • Water and electricity on the quay
  • Nice tavernas ashore

Methana marina

The bottom is very muddy, and the holding is good. Some recommend anchoring with the spare anchor to keep the chain from corrosion.
