Welcome back, sailors. In this visual pilot video, we continue our journey along the Italian Riviera, sailing south from Sestri Levante toward La Spezia.
From Golfo di Levante to Levanto
We depart from the tranquil Golfo di Levante — a gentle beginning to a spectacular stretch of coastline. Towering cliffs, rugged inlets, and deep blue waters unfold as we cruise toward Levanto.
Levanto offers a broad, quiet bay framed by wooded hills. It’s a peaceful anchorage — perfect for a swim or a walk ashore, and an ideal waypoint before entering the Cinque Terre.
️ Exploring Vernazza and the Cinque Terre by Sea
Just beyond Levanto lies Vernazza, a small natural port surrounded by steep terraces and colourful facades. This is one of five historic villages that form the Cinque Terre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Five Lands of Liguria
Monterosso al Mare
Vernazza
Corniglia
Manarola
Riomaggiore
These cliffside villages are known for their vibrant houses, narrow alleys, terraced vineyards, and small fishing harbors — each shaped by centuries of maritime life.
✨ Riomaggiore by Water
Riomaggiore, the southernmost village of the five, stands out with tightly stacked houses above a tiny marina. Approaching by boat or exploring on foot, its raw coastal beauty leaves a lasting impression.
Portovenere: Stone, Sea & History
As the light softens, we continue to Portovenere — a fortified village with narrow alleys, ancient towers, and the dramatic Church of St. Peter rising from the cliffs.
The approach is unforgettable. The sea meets centuries-old stonework, and pastel buildings line the shore like a living canvas.
⚓ Entering the Gulf of Poets & La Spezia
We sail into the sheltered waters of La Spezia, often called the Gulf of Poets — a name inspired by poets like Byron and Shelley who found creativity and calm in this bay.
We berth at Porto Mirabello Marina, a full-service harbor surrounded by rolling hills and seafaring tradition.
Exploring Cinque Terre by Land
From La Spezia, we rented a car to explore the Cinque Terre from above — walking the Sentiero Azzurro cliffside trail, taking in panoramic sea views, and enjoying the timeless charm of each coastal village.
Plan Your Next Sailing Route
This stretch of Liguria is ideal for sailors who love both the sea and the shore. Quiet passages, dramatic scenery, and historic villages make it a route worth repeating.
