The island has two mountain ranges. The Kyrenia and kappas mountains run approx. W to E along the N coast, and the Troodos mountains in the W, with mount Olympus rising to 1,951m.

Geopolitically, the island is subdivided into four main segments. The Republic of Cyprus occupies the southern two-thirds of the island (59.74%). The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus occupies the northern third (34.85%), and the United Nations-controlled Green Line provides a buffer zone that separates the two and covers 2.67% of the island. Lastly, two bases under British sovereignty are located on the island: Akrotiri and Dhekelia, including the remaining 2.74%.

Weather patterns 

The prevailing wind is a westerly strongest in July and August.

In the late evening to mid-morning, there will often be a NE wind. Away from the coast, the wind is between W-WSW, at Larnaca, it blows from the SSW and even curls around into the bay from the S and SE
