Explore two of the most picturesque villages of Cinque Terre from the sea — Vernazza and Riomaggiore. This sailing guide from SeaTV includes coordinates, approach tips, and what to expect when cruising this stunning stretch of the Ligurian coast.
⚓ Vernazza – Sailing Overview
Coordinates: 44°08’.1N 09°40’.0E
About the Harbour
Vernazza lies at the mouth of a steep-sided valley and is framed by dramatic cliffs on one side and pastel-colored houses on the other. The harbour is tiny, without berthing facilities or moorings, but it offers one of the most iconic views in all of Liguria.
Sailing Tips
No marina or anchorage — suitable for daytime visual approach only.
Best visited in calm weather with minimal swell.
Stay offshore and approach slowly for drone filming or photography.
Shore access is only practical by dinghy in very settled conditions.
What Makes Vernazza Special
One of the five villages of Cinque Terre (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
Colourful facades, medieval tower, and stone jetty
Cosy trattorias and a beautiful town square by the water
No cars — just steep alleys, arches, and stairs
Riomaggiore – Sailing Overview
Approx. Coordinates: 44°05’.9N 09°44’.3E
About the Village
Riomaggiore is the southernmost of the Cinque Terre villages. It clings dramatically to a steep ravine and descends sharply toward a small marina framed by colorful homes stacked on the hillsides.
Approach by Sea
Harbor is very narrow and exposed — not suitable for anchoring.
Swells enter easily — not safe for stopping unless conditions are exceptionally calm.
Best experienced from offshore — sail slowly along the coast for unforgettable views and photos.
To visit the village, it’s best to berth in La Spezia or Le Grazie and go by land.
