Portovenere by Boat – Approach, Marina, Anchorage & Overnight Guide

Hello Sailors, and welcome to Portovenere — one of the most spectacular harbour entries on the Ligurian coast and your gateway to the Gulf of Poets. In this visual pilot, you’ll learn how to approach safely, choose between marinas and anchorages, and enjoy an unforgettable overnight stay.

Safe Approach & Entry

Approach from the south, keeping Palmaria Island to port and the Church of St. Peter to starboard. The entrance is narrow and local ferries operate frequently, so maintain a steady course and controlled speed. Prevailing winds are typically southwesterly, and swell can enter in stronger conditions — assess the sea state before committing to the channel.

⚓ Anchoring: Baia di Portovenere (North & South)

If you prefer to anchor, two common areas are charted in the bay. Conditions vary; always verify on your own navigation system and local notices.

Baia di Portovenere North

  • Shelter: Generally better from southerly winds.
  • Exposure: More open to northerly breezes and associated chop.
  • Notes: Mind ferry traffic and swinging room; confirm depths and bottom type on your charts/sounder.

Baia di Portovenere South

  • Shelter: Generally better from northerly winds.
  • Exposure: More open to southerly swell and afternoon sea breeze.
  • Notes: Check for designated no-anchor zones and seabed protections; maintain clear distances from traffic lanes.

Skipper’s reminder: confirm anchor position, depth, scope, swing, and local restrictions. Use updated electronic charts and observe real-time conditions before committing.

️ Marina Options & VHF

Evening Ashore: What Not to Miss

Church of St. Peter

Perched dramatically on the rocky point, the church overlooks the strait — a perfect spot for wide, golden-hour views.

Via Giovanni Capellini

The main street is a narrow passage lined with gelaterias, boutiques, and small eateries (try La Bottega del Pesto for fresh pasta and homemade pesto). Take the steps down to the waterfront or up toward San Lorenzo Church to discover hidden courtyards and gardens.

Doria Castle

Keep climbing beyond San Lorenzo and you’ll reach the 12th-century Doria Castle, an impressive fortress framing the village and sea below.
