Ko Phi Phi Island Anchorages: A Comprehensive Guide

Ko Phi Phi Northeast

Coordinates: 7°46.829N 98°45′.998E

Suitability: Southwest season only

  • Good holding in no less than 12 meters
  • Large flat rocky reef in front of the beach, exposed up to 200 meters at low tide[1]

Caution: Do not navigate between Mai Phai, Ko Yung, and Hing Klang

Lanah Bay

Coordinates: 7°46.085N 98°45′.718E

Suitability: Northeast season only

  • Anchor well offshore in 12 to 15 meters
  • Do not venture far into the bay due to coral closure[2]

Loh Ba Gao Bay

Coordinates: 7°45.721N 98°46′.688E

  • Anchor a reasonable distance off in not less than 15 meters
  • Phi Phi Island Village Resort and Spa, located on the beach
  • Beware of large rocky reef, exposed up to 500 meters at low tide[3]

Yongkasem Beach (Mad Monkey Beach)

Coordinates: 7°44.736N 98°45′.689E

  • Sheltered in all but northwest winds
  • Anchor well offshore in no less than 15 meters
  • No facilities ashore

Note: Nearby Lohdalum bay is not suitable for yachts due to coral heads and noise from nightclubs[4]

Relax Resort

Coordinates: 7°45.391N 98°46′.944E

  • Anchor in no less than 15 meters well offshore of the reef
  • Reef extends over 200 meters from the beach in places
  • Shore access difficult on tides below 1.5 meters[5]

Ton Sai Bay

Coordinates: 7°43.824N 98°46′.234E

  • Anchor south of red and white channel marker in 10 to 13 meters
  • Enter the bay on the west side only
  • Large reef along the entire east side
  • Avoid private moorings and reefs on the west side[6]

Safety Precautions for Ton Sai Bay

  • Do not pick up any moorings – they are all private
  • Avoid leaving dinghies against the rock wall
  • Only bring monohulls alongside the pontoon at high tide
  • Swimming off the back of the boat is not recommended
  • Exercise caution when embarking/disembarking dinghies due to wake from high-speed vessels

General Safety Warnings

  • Be aware of the submerged reef at Hin Klang (7°47.50N 98°47.00E)
  • Always check weather conditions and tides before anchoring
  • Respect local communities and their privacy
  • Use updated nautical charts and navigation equipment
